New Conference Model Background
•
•
•
•
•
Membership and conference attendance trending downward
Median age of members is 51
92% Male
# Exhibitors at conference rapidly shrinking
Systems engineering becoming more prevalent in industry but
not represented in current conference model
• “Tiger” team formed to look into alternatives to current
conference structure
• Meeting held yesterday (8 Jan 2012) to discuss this issue and
obtain feedback from TCs
50th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting - January, 2012 - Nashville, TN
P&E Discussion Framework
• There Is An “Imperative For Change”
• NEM Tiger Team Has Developed & Evaluated Four Specific
Conference Model Options; Briefed At 8Jan12’s TAC Workshop
• Exact Path Forward Is TBD (TAC Meeting On Thursday)
 Incorporating Workshop Feedback; Stay The Course Vs. Change Direction?
 Process & Timeline For Making An Actionable Decision
 Assume At Some Point, There Will Be A TAC/BOD Vote On A Specific Motion
• Issues Before P&E Leadership
 How Do We Best Solicit And Represent Feedback From Our TC Members &
From The P&E Community As A Whole?
 Is There A Specific Option That Is “Best” For The P&E Community?
 Is There Value In Developing A “P&E Group Position” … Or, Is It Best Left
To
12
Each TC Or Each Individual Member?
Four Event Models Assessed to Date
Name
Current
Description
• Current portfolio with minor change, e.g., some co-location
Consolidated • Current larger Events (ASM, Fluids, JPC, Space, GNC, SDM) plus
Aviation and Defense as centers of gravity for consolidating smaller
conferences
• Augment with systems development/integration elements
Integrated
• Comprehensive, domain-focused Events providing integrated content
• ~4 Events spread over the year: R&D, Aviation, Space, and Defense
Unified
• Multi-domain, unified Events split between R&D and Systems
Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT)
• One big Event for R&D (winter) and one for SEIT/programs (summer)
and a smaller Defense conference
13
P&E Resolution
• The committees in the P&E group were unanimously favorable to
the consolidated model which maintains the JPC, ASM and 4
other large conferences and combines the smaller conferences
into one of the larger conferences
• A large number of TCs (again) emphasized the need for ITAR
sessions to make the conference more relevant to U.S.
attendees.
• P&E group adopted a resolution (paraphrased):
 If a new conference model is required, the consolidated model should be
adopted with a review in 3 years to determine whether further change is
required.
 We believe the larger issue behind falling membership, less attendance at
conferences is due to lack of ITAR sessions and recommend
incorporating these in the consolidated model.
Need your input
• Discussion
• Please write comments on what you personally
view as important aspects for conferences and
the impact on various models would have on
your interest / attendance.
• Please give me comments tonight. Other
thoughts later to rob.black@aerojet.com
