The Theme of Chance - The rationale behind this theme is to investigate probability, via theory and experiment. It will start with the concept of chance and bias being explored via various practical games and should extend through to conditional probability and tree diagrams. At all times the correct notation for probability should be encouraged. This theme gives pupils a real chance (!) to see maths in action. You can experiment with this using a variety of resources that are available such as the horse race and the Monty Hall problem. This theme should include) Basic probability of events using fraction, decimal and percentages, including probability from two way tables, Mutually exclusive events, Independent events, Relative frequency and experimental probability, v)Tree diagrams – with the emphasis on visualising and constructing the actual diagram and Venn Diagrams. They have been taught towards the Edexcel specification formally from Year 10 so they will be familiar with the assessment objectives involved. These four objectives are develop, explore, record and present. Students will be directed with a new topic to investigate based on the assessment objectives and their own personal response to their examination title which will be published in the spring term. Students will have 4 months to complete their examination preparatory project before sitting their externally set examination where they will be expected to complete the outcome that is based on their preparatory studies. As a department we feel it is crucial to allow the student some freedom to select their own topic within a given theme. Through individual teacher led tutorials that decision will made early on in the spring term. This flexibility allows the student to investigate a topic that they are passionate about which provides both enjoyment for the student and an opportunity for the teacher to really ‘get to know’ each child on a more individual level enriching their work and everyone’s experience. Try our new French corner in the New Library. Open every break and lunchtime. Maths at All Saints King’s College and Exeter University run a nationwide competition each year for students in years 10 and 11 to produce a video on a particular mathematical topic. This year the theme was “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” and required students to present a 5 minute video on the life, work and modern day influence of a famous mathematician. We entered two teams from year 11. Both teams’ work was highly commended by the judges and “Team Cartesian” managed to win the overall competition for their work on Rene Descartes! The winning team will be presented with their prize of a graphical calculator each next Wednesday at the Bank of England. Their winning video is on the King’s College site and can be viewed at: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/mathsschool/Competition/2015-winners.aspx RAISING MONEY FOR CAFOD. Chaplaincy would like to thank all those who took part in the sponsored silence, in order to raise funds for CAfOD World Gifts for people in developing countries. We managed to raise £3,200. As per usual, each form provided a hamper to be given to the Local St. Vincent de Paul conferences in the deanery and neighbouring Parishes and Anchor House. The 6th Form did their bit and arranged a number of activities ranging from Sumo Wrestling; Cake and doughnut selling; penalty shoot outs; film screening and a sweet & sour challenge. They managed to raise between £800-£1000. Due to the untimely death of a student of All Saints, their money is being donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
