Assignment 3
Part 1
During the week of September 17, 2010 JP Morgan Chase’s information systems were
down for three days. JP Morgan Chase experienced an outage from Monday night thru
Wednesday night. The very next day on Thursday the bank released a statement apologizing for
any inconvenience that customers may have experienced. JP Morgan Chase is a prestigious
banking company. Online banking is very important to consumers in this new age of technology.
Due to the fact that this service was unavailable to customers for three days may affect this
company drastically. Since the online banking system was down for three days that means that
money coming out of accounts to make payments was unable to occur. This caused customers to
accrue late fees and all sorts of other unnecessary charges.
JP Morgan Chase experienced a backlash from its customers because they were not
happy with the events taking place at all. Eventually JP Morgan Chase refunded late fees that
were incorrectly charged to customer accounts because of the outage. The real problem here is
finding the source of this issue so it can be resolved immediately. Computer World states that
“blamed a third party database company’s software.” The third party was Oracle. Curt Monash,
principle of Monash Research, offered some insight on the situation. He believes that a
corruption in the database caused the outage. Monash believes that the outage was not JP
Morgan Chase’s fault.
Part 2
The Apple IPad was a very successful innovation concerning the information technology
field. Initially Apple started out with IPods, which was a huge hit across the country. Now Apple
turns its focus to the IPad. The IPad is a flat screen format computer which measures 9.56 x 7.47
x 0.5 inches and it weighs 1.5 pounds. The IPad features a bright LED backlit multi-touchenabled 9.7 inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 768. It was built with a rechargeable battery
that lasts up ten hours. The IPad was built with a custom Apple processor which runs at 1GHz.
Apple released the very first IPad in April 2010. The IPad sold 3 million units in 80 days. In
2010, Apple sold 14.8 million IPads worldwide. By the end of 2010 Apple controlled seventy
five percent of tablet PC sales. Fifteen million Ipads were sold by the release the IPad 2 in March
2011.
Part 3
Yes I do believe that the IT industry learns from its mistakes. This is an industry that has
grown due to trial and error. Every problem has a solution, it just all depends on if you have the
right equipment and technology. IT workers have to troubleshoot technical issues which involve
a lot experience. IT professionals rely on past experiences and situations to troubleshoot issues.
Most IT professionals and companies document there encounters and studies throughout the
industry. Sometimes this information is released to the public in journals, magazines, and
computer technology websites. In all actually you can learn from other IT professional’s
mistakes and successes.
