SECTION 3 – SUMOL NAZARÉ SPECIAL EDITION IS BACK
on
Sumol Nazaré special edition is back: The best international bodyboarders return to Praia do Norte
the 12th October till 1st November 2011 Sumol Nazaré Special Edition is back in 2011.
As part of the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA) calendar, this year´s Special Edition
waiting period will be from 12th October to 1st November and will present as it has already, important
names in both national and international bodyboarding, who will challenge, for the fifth time, the waves
of the Praia do Norte.
Considered the "queen wave" of Nazaré and one of the most respected around the coasts of Europe, Praia do Norte is known for its
perfect and big waves which can easily reach six meters high.
In the last edition (2009), the waves of Nazaré showed up in gala, easily reaching four meters high and appealing to the courage
and skill of the riders present. The perfect size and strength of the waves of Nazaré are the flag of the competition, with a unique
and special formula that changed the way bodyboarding is seen by the public in general.
The concept previously adopted, will be maintained by the organization of this fifth edition, by offering the participating athletes
excellent conditions in terms of waves within the established waiting period.
The list of participants is the top ranking athletes of the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA), who will be invited by the
organization to face the waves of Nazaré.
In 2009, Mike Stewart, nine-times world champion, was the first international athlete to win the trophy in this competition, previously
won by Portuguese athletes only. Luis "Porkito" Pereira won in 2005 and 2007 with some of the biggest waves ever surfed in
Portugal and Paulo Costa won the inaugural event in 2003.
The motto is launched for one more unique event in the whole world with the promise of plenty of action on the waves of Nazaré.

More Information on the Canyon of Nazaré and the waves of Praia do Norte
The Nazaré Canyon is a rare geomorphologic accident. Being the Europe's largest and one of the largest in the world, it consists of
a continental plate failure with about 170 km long and reaches 5 km depth. Situated on the seafront of Praia do Norte, this
phenomenon keeps all the power of the North
Atlantic swell creating abnormally large size waves, compared to the rest of the Portuguese coast.
A veritable playground for all waves´ sports lovers that find on this beach the ideal conditions to overcome their limits.

SECTION 6 – EXD'11 - EXPERIMENTA DESIGN: CREATIVITY UNLEASHED
Exd'11 - Experimenta Design: Creativity unleashed
The international design, architecture and creativity biennial EXD'11 - Experimenta Design is back in
Lisboa to create a stir in the city's historic centre with dozens of events bustling with creativity and
cutting edge spirit, from September 28 to November 27.
Taking inspiration from the theme of "Useless" (itself a provocation), EXD's 11th edition will bring
together hundreds of professionals and creatives in the Portuguese capital around the idea of use and
disuse, useful and useless, proposing new interpretations of what is produced and consumed.
Lisboa will thus be the platform of choice for exchanging ideas and experiences through an extensive
and eclectic program consisting of exhibitions, urban interventions, conference cycles, debates, film
screenings, among other initiatives.
The Biennial's 21 core events and more than 50 parallel ones will be held in the most diverse cultural facilities and other lesserknown public venues in Lisboa's most landmark areas.
The Biennial's already close links to the city are embodied this year with the geographical concentration of EXD'11 venues in the
centre of the Portuguese capital, all within walking distance of each other from Amoreiras to Alfama, including Baixa-Chiado.
Ever closer to the general public, EXD'11 extends even to the most unexpected places such as gardens, palaces and theatres, thus
inviting its visitors and all who pass through Lisboa to learn more about the city's historic and architectural heritage, in a harmonious
combination of tradition and modernity.
The EXD Lounging Space will be housed in the heart of Chiado, at the former courthouse of Tribunal da Boa Hora, acting as the
main hub of the biennial with its visitors. Here visitors can enjoy a lounge area, bar, information centre and its own activities
program.
Held in Lisboa since 1999, the Biennial is regarded as one of the boldest international events in its sector, placing Lisboa on the
international map of the world's creative and cultural industries.

SECTION 10 – CASA DAS HISTÓRIAS: NEW EXHIBITIONS
Casa das Histórias: New Exhibitions
Casa das Histórias - Paula Rego, in Cascais, renews its exhibit areas with the hosting of two
new exhibitions dedicated to the work of the Portuguese painter.
"The body has more elbows" and "Oratory," the latest work of Paula Rego, are the two
independent exhibits that mark this new exhibition cycle, until December 31.
Featuring an almost three metre high mobile, the "Oratory" combines drawings and sculptures
similar to those found in old Portuguese oratories. The sculptures represent children dressed in
the uniforms of the Foundling Hospital. This work is the result of an invitation by the Foundling
Museum in London, the first institution to receive abandoned children in the city.
The work seems to reveal a new direction in the artist's work, establishing an interaction between drawing and sculpture.
Thematically Paula Rego tackles issues associated with the vulnerability of young people, their loneliness or abandonment.
In turn, "The body has more elbows" is the title of the new exhibition of works from the Casa das Historias - Paula Rego Collection.
The exhibition brings together more than one hundred works with iconic pieces from the collection such as "Love," "Among Women",
"Angel", and the "Mercy" and "Cycle of the Virgin" series, all by Paula Rego.
More about the “Casa das Histórias”:
The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego was designed by the architect Eduardo Souto
de Moura. The building makes use of certain aspects of the region's historical
architecture, which is here reinterpreted in a contemporary way. It can be
immediately recognised thanks to its two pyramid-shaped towers and the redcoloured concrete used in its construction.
The land and trees which previously existed at the site are incorporated as
fundamental elements, while four wings, of varying heights and sizes, make up the
building. The building itself is subdivided into rooms which lead into one another and are laid out around the higher central room
which houses the temporary exhibition. The building's interior has 750m2 of exhibition space, on top of the technical and service
areas, and is decorated in neutral shades and paved with the blue-grey marble of Cascais. The building also houses a shop, a café
which opens onto a verdant garden and an auditorium with 200 seats.
The building's design is fully in keeping with the artist's wishes, and it was Paul Rego herself who was responsible for the choice of
architect. It meets all the requirements for a museum and its various functions, without forgetting the need to give visitors a warm
welcome.
"With the Casa das Histórias, it can be said that Eduardo Souto de Moura has adopted and almost 'regionalist' approach, distancing
himself from the modern abstractionism that has been a dominant feature of his work. It is, however, an uncritical regionalism, that

avoids the sense of 'resistante' which lay behind other attempts at the approach in Portugal in the 1980s. In this museum created for
Cascais, Souto de Moura associates certain formal devices with a legacy of architectural composition, adopting specific formulas for
the building's insertion in the surrounding area as well as a use of scale which can be easily contextualised in a very specific type of
geography. Its close proximity to the work of Raul Lino is therefore set in a "Southern" landscape, without resorting to any
unnecessary decorative or picturesque frills."1
(1 O Arquitectar das Casas Simples, Ana Vaz Milheiro, in Casa das Histórias Paula Rego - Arquitectura, 2009)
"With this museum, Souto de Moura develops a form of "modern-day architecture" without,
in fact, repeating any of the "old models" - in keeping with the ideas defended by Aldo
Rossi in his scientific autobiography - evoking timeless archetypes from urban iconography:
towers, lighthouses, silos and chimneys, like the ones that define the profile of the Palácio
de Sintra. It is therefore not surprising, if one continues the "analogy", that, when describing
this museum, Souto de Moura also mentioned the pronounced roofs of Raul Lino's palaces,
or the idea of an "inhabited chimney", evoking that of the kitchen in the monastery of
Alcobaça. In fact, in its best interpretation, the Casa das Histórias can be seen as a
"historicist" project, a condition that will certainly surprise Souto de Moura's most faithful followers and confound his harshest
critics."2

SECTION 12 – ITINERARY SUGGESTION: DAYS OF ROMANCE
Days of romance: Central Portugal offers the perfect settings for a romantic getaway.
Why not begin with a trip through the infinite green slopes of the Serra do Açor. From a high belvedere, you
can admire the landscape dotted with small stone villages and echoing with the sounds of nature. Stop by in
Coja or Avô, two villages overlooking the river, that offer as genuine an atmosphere as Piódão - one of the
most famous historic villages in the region. Enjoy magical moments together as you gently meander through
the narrow streets of this village formed by black slate houses.
Then head off to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. By car or on foot, discover the many enchantments of
the granite landscape, littered with brooks and green pastures.
12
In the late afternoon, visit Belmonte, another historic village where you can spend the night in the romantic Pousada do Convento.
There’s still time for an evening stroll, hand-in-hand, through the old Jewish quarter to the castle, offering breathtaking views over
the horizon.
On the second day, there’s time for a walk through Sortelha’s medieval walls, another historic village marked by the grandiose
mountain landscape of the “Serra”.
On your way to Guarda you’ll pass through a Sabugal where you can marvel at the spectacular views offered by the castle. Once in
Guarda, Portugal’s highest city, it’s well worth visiting the Sé cathedral and wandering through the old Jewish quarter. Before
continuing the journey to Vouzela - that has one of the finest belvederes in the region - don’t miss the chance to visit Viseu’s historic
centre and the magnificent art collection in the Grão Vasco Museum.
An excellent way to round off the trip is to take a bath in the Thermal spa in São Pedro do Sul. The spa has been famous since the
12th century, and served as a resting place for the first King of Portugal between his battles against the Moors. Don’t return without
also taking a rest in this unique spot, and think about the many beautiful places you’ve seen on your trip through the heart of
Portugal.

SECTION 13 – NEW BIRD WATCHING GUIDES LAUNCHED
New Bird Watching guides launched
Turismo de Portugal with the support of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and Institute
for conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (ICNB) have launched a new Natural Tourism Bird Watching
Guide.
This guide leads to 36 sites on seven itineraries for great bird watching in Portugal, and is offered in English
as well as Portuguese.
Portugal is in one of the most important spots for biodiversity worldwide. Its landscape is varied, with sharp
mountains and plains, valleys and river flood plains, extensive forests , rocky shores, beaches, estuaries,
coastal lagoons and marsh. That has lead to the largest diversity of birds in Europe with around 330
species.
More information about this guide available at VisitPortugal.com
Birdwatching in Portugal:
Did you know that Portugal is one of Europe’s finest birdwatching destinations? There is no other
European country where it’s possible to see an iberian imperial eagle or azure-winged magpie amongst a
total of around 330 species found in the country?
The wide variety of natural habitats, concentrated in this small territory, make it possible to drive quickly
from high mountains to lush hills overlooking the sea, or from estuaries to cork-oak plantations. In the
estuary of the River Tagus alone - only 20 minutes from Lisbon - it’s possible to observe 100 bird species
in a single day!
While experienced “birdwatchers” are easily able to distinguish birds such as the great bustard, bittern or
kestrel from rarer species such as the Rupell’s griffon and the reef heron, amateurs can enjoy an
excellent way to appreciate the best of nature. To start with, book a trip with a specialized company.
Bring some comfortable footwear and clothing as well as some binoculars to make sure you don’t miss
any colourful bird hidden in the vegetation.
Some of the finest birdwatching zones are located in protected areas - that occupy 21% of the national territory. In the North it’s
possible to take a cruise to enjoy the beautiful slopes of the River Douro, where Egyptian vultures build their nests. In the Tagus
International Park, walking or bike-riding provide an excellent opportunity to watch black storks and griffon vultures perched on
fossil-covered rocks. In the Algarve, take a break from swimming and sunbathing in order to discover the Ria Formosa or the Sapal
de Castro Marim marshland - two important wetlands populated by flamingos and herons, amongst many other species.
Why not fly to the islands in the Atlantic Ocean? It’s well worth the trip because you’ll encounter birds that don’t exist in any other
part of the world, such as the Zino’s petrel and long-toed wood pigeon in Madeira, or the Azores Bullfinch. The best birdwatching
zones are Ponta do Pargo, Ponta de São Lourenço and islands of Desertas in the Archipelago of Madeira, or Pico da Vara in the
island of São Miguel (Azores).
Whichever option you try, you’re sure to be amazed by the spectacularly beautiful landscapes, as you follow the flight of birds
intersecting across ever-blue skies. For your own “perch” why not use choose a country holiday unit, or a fine hotel establishment
and surrender to the charms of Portugal’s famous hospitality.
