ВВЕДЕНИЕ
В настоящее время наблюдается ускорение темпов развития общества,
расширяются возможности политического и социального выбора. В свете
этих изменений возрастает роль иностранного языка как средства
межкультурного и профессионального взаимодействия представителей
разных народов. Что обуславливает необходимость и актуальность
формирования иноязычной профессионально-ориентированной компетенции
будущих специалистов.
Область применения программы
Программа учебной дисциплины является частью образовательной
программы среднего профессионального образования по
подготовке
специалистов среднего звена по специальности Техническое обслуживание и
ремонт автомобильного транспорта (базовая подготовка).
Место дисциплины в структуре основной профессиональной
образовательной программы: учебная дисциплина относится к общему
гуманитарному
и
социально-экономическому
циклу
основной
профессиональной программы.
Цели и задачи дисциплины – требования к результатам освоения
дисциплины:
В результате освоения дисциплины студент должен
уметь:
 общаться устно и письменно на иностранном языке на
профессиональные и повседневные темы;
 переводить (со словарем) иностранные тексты профессиональной
направленности;
 самостоятельно совершенствовать устную и письменную речь и
пополнять словарный запас.

3 ВЫПОЛНЕНИЕ И ОФОРМЛЕНИЕ КОНТРОЛЬНЫХ ЗАДАНИЙ
Условием допуска к зачету является выполнение контрольных работ:
к/р № 1 – второй семестр, к/р № 2 – четвертый семестр, к/р № 3 – шестой
семестр, к/р № 4 – восьмой семестр.
Цель контрольных заданий – оказать помощь студенту в его
самостоятельной работе, а также проверить степень усвоения им учебного
материала, начитанного за данный семестр.
Контрольное задание в данном пособии предлагается в десяти
вариантах. Студент должен выполнить один из десяти вариантов
контрольного задания. Номер варианта выбирается по первой букве фамилии
студента по таблице:

Оформление титульного листа (приложение 1).
Контрольная работа должна быть написана четким, понятным
почерком, без исправлений. На страницах работы следует оставить поля (3
см) для пометок и замечаний проверяющего преподавателя.

Студенту следует первый лист оставить чистым для написания
замечаний преподавателя.
При выполнении работы следует сначала указывать задания
контрольной работы, а затем само выполнение задания.
Выполнение контрольного задания студент должен представить
преподавателю для проверки за две недели до лабораторно-экзаменационной
сессии.

Досрочное выполнение работ разрешается, однако во избежание
повторения возможных ошибок, студент должен выполнять и предоставлять
на проверку только одну контрольную работу.
Дается общая оценка «зачтено» или «не зачтено». Если работа не
зачтена, в нее необходимо внести соответствующие исправления с учетом
сделанных замечаний. Повторная проверка работы осуществляется, как
правило, тем же преподавателем, который рецензировал ее в первый раз.
Студенты, не выполнившие контрольную работу или не получившие зачета
по ней, к зачетам не допускаются.

Mass Media
Mass media is a broad concept. It includes radio, television, newspapers,
magazines, Internet and else. It’s hard to imagine life without mass media
nowadays. Media plays very important part in everyday life. It informs us about
current affairs in the world. It educates us, gives a possibility to learn something
new. It certainly entertains us in different ways. Mass media influences the way
people dress, eat, communicate and many other parts of our lives. It can often
make people change their views on different matters. Millions of people watch TV
every day, listen to the radio in cars, read newspaper and magazines. Everyone
finds something interesting through means of media. Of course, not all that we see,
hear or read is objective. Sometimes the information can be altered. However, I
believe that good reporters try to deliver us only reliable information. My favourite
types of media are TV and Internet. I often watch interesting films on TV or
educational channels, such as Animal Planet and National Geographic. As for
Internet, it probably unites all media sources nowadays. So I can easily watch the
same films or channels online. Besides, Internet is also used for mass
communication, so I use it to talk to my friends. I don’t usually listen to the radio
but if my parents turn it on in the car, I enjoy it. We also buy sometimes
newspapers and magazines from kiosks.

Sport is very important in our life. The general belief is that a person who goes in

country sport is being widely popularized as well. The most popular kinds of sport
are football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, figure-skating, aerobics, ping-pong and
swimming. A lot of people are fond of jogging. In schools and colleges sport is
a compulsory subject. Many young people attend sport sections. Some of them
dream to become professional sportsmen. As for me, I can’t imagine my life
without sport. In summer I go jogging every morning and when I have free time I
attend swimming pool. In winter I like to skate with my friends. It’s fun. Also I’m
fond of aerobics. First of all aerobics helps to keep myself fit. It also attracts me
because it resembles dancing. In conclusion I’d like to say that I’m absolutely sure
that doing sports is the best way to keep fit. Sport makes our bodies strong,
it prevents us from getting too fat, and makes us more self-organized and better
disciplined.

The health of a person is the main value in the life. It cannot be bought with
any money! There is no price for it. Being the sick person, you cannot realize all
your dreams and be successful in the modern world. But how to be healthy, when
there are a lot of fatal temptations around us? Don`t begin! Don`t make the first
cigar inhalation, the first sip of alcohol! Everything begins so simply, but comes to
the end with a trouble. It was said so much about the harm of smoking. For a long
time it has been proved, that smoking is not only reflected on the budget of a
family, pollutes air, but also ruins our health. But, in spite of all that the number of
smoking people is not diminished. And what is more grievous, not only the teens
but also the junior schoolboys begin to smoke. I think those, who don`t do his (her)
best in study or school life, as a rule begin to smoke at the school age. It was
proved, that there is no such organ which would not suffer from smoking. Smoking
is not a harmless pastime which can be given up without efforts. It is necessary to
have the will - power to stop smoking. In addition to smoking, we can name the
other fatal habit: the drinking of alcohol. Unfortunately, very often they combine
with each other. Alcohol is a poison! Having penetrated into an organism, it has
destroyed the brain of the person for some months. A great man said that drinking
alcohol is a voluntary mad, and I think he was right. Under the influence of alcohol
the person can make absolutely rash actions. The matter is that alcoholis the drug,
and drugs influence on the brains of the person. Especially alcohol is very
dangerous for the young because their organism is exposed to the influence of
harmful substances more easily. Even a single sip of alcohol causes a poisoning
which can lead to death. And the usage of drugs … They ruin all human organs, so
the drug addicts die young. Few of them live longer than several years after they
have started taking drugs. So, I consider that there is no place to these habits in our
life. To my mind, only healthy people should live on our planet and then our Earth
will be brighter and more beautiful, because only the healthy person will provide
its further development and prosperity.

Nowadays healthy life-style is gaining more and more popularity. Lately
people have finally realized that whatever a person would do and whatever post he

Health). People became more health-conscious. Now everyone understands that
healthy nutrition is not a mere name. Even developing countries began to take
GMO, colorings and unnatural additives with caution. Now buying only organic
and healthy food, eating more fruits and vegetables, as well as going in for sports
and keeping fit are in. Sport is as important as the quality of food. Many people are
still lazy and do not want to take up any sports, because they think that sport is
only weights and bulky exercise equipments. In fact, sport is an active approach to
life and desire to improve a body. We are not talking only about the gyms and
professional sports centers. The alternative of any exercises can be dancing,
walking and jogging in the open air. Healthy lifestyle is not only a sound body but
also a sound mind. Faith, optimistic approach to life, ability to keep even temper
and calm - these things are also equally important.

Problems of Youth
Life used to be fun for 'teenagers'. They used to have money to spend, and
free time to spend it in. They used to wear teenage clothes, and meet in teenage

Things are more expensive, and it's hard to find a place to live.

don't find it, and go home again, or join the many unemployed in London. There
used to be one kind of teenage fashion, one style, one top pop group. Then, the
girls all wore mini-skirts and everyone danced to the music of the Beatles and
the Rolling Stones.
But now an eighteen-year-old might be a punk, with green hair and chains
round his legs, or a skin head, with short, short hair and right wing politics, or a
'rasta', with long uncombed hair and a love for Africa. There's a lot of different
music around too. There's reggae, the West Indian sound, there's rock, there's
heavy metal, country and western, and disco. All these kinds of music are
played by different groups and listened to by different fans.
When you read the newspapers and watch the news on television, it's easy to
get the idea that British young people are all unemployed, angry and in trouble.
But that's not true. Three quarters of them do more or less what their parents
did. They do their best at school, find some kind of work in the end, and get
married in their early twenties. They get on well with their parents, and enjoy
family life. They eat fish and chips, watch football on TV, go to the pub, and
like reading about pop stars. After all, if they didn't, they wouldn't be British,
would they?

We have a great tradition in our family. Every month we go to the theatre. I

means of media. Of course, not all that we see, hear or read is objective.
Sometimes the information can be altered. However, I believe that good
reporters try to deliver us only reliable information. My favourite types of
media are TV and Internet. I often watch interesting films on TV or
educational channels, such as Animal Planet and National Geographic. As for
Internet, it probably unites all media sources nowadays. So I can easily watch
the same films or channels online. Besides, Internet is also used for mass
communication, so I use it to talk to my friends. I don’t usually listen to the
radio but if my parents turn it on in the car, I enjoy it. We also buy sometimes
newspapers and magazines from kiosks.

with each other. Alcohol is a poison! Having penetrated into an organism, it has
destroyed the brain of the person for some months. A great man said that drinking
alcohol is a voluntary mad, and I think he was right. Under the influence of alcohol
the person can make absolutely rash actions. The matter is that alcoholis the drug,
and drugs influence on the brains of the person. Especially alcohol is very
dangerous for the young because their organism is exposed to the influence of
harmful substances more easily. Even a single sip of alcohol causes a poisoning

Problems of Youth
Life used to be fun for 'teenagers'. They used to have money to spend, and

from other parts of Britain, looking for jobs. Some find work, and stay. Others
don't find it, and go home again, or join the many unemployed in London. There
used to be one kind of teenage fashion, one style, one top pop group. Then, the
girls all wore mini-skirts and everyone danced to the music of the Beatles and
the Rolling Stones.
But now an eighteen-year-old might be a punk, with green hair and chains
round his legs, or a skin head, with short, short hair and right wing politics, or a
'rasta', with long uncombed hair and a love for Africa. There's a lot of different
music around too. There's reggae, the West Indian sound, there's rock, there's
heavy metal, country and western, and disco. All these kinds of music are
played by different groups and listened to by different fans.
When you read the newspapers and watch the news on television, it's easy to
get the idea that British young people are all unemployed, angry and in trouble.
But that's not true. Three quarters of them do more or less what their parents
did. They do their best at school, find some kind of work in the end, and get
married in their early twenties. They get on well with their parents, and enjoy
family life. They eat fish and chips, watch football on TV, go to the pub, and
like reading about pop stars. After all, if they didn't, they wouldn't be British,
would they?

We have a great tradition in our family. Every month we go to the theatre. I

Educational system in Great Britain: The modern system of education consists of
early childhood education, primary education, secondary education, higher
education. Across the country a free public education for all children exist.
Children aged from 5 to 16 years are included. The duration of the school year is
38 weeks. The year is divided into trimesters, which are separated by vacation:
summer (6 weeks), Christmas and Easter (2-3 weeks). A week break is provided in

Students are trained 5-6 days a week.

Vocational education
Vocational education (nachalnoe professionalnoe obrazovanie) is the initial
stage of professional education. It is aimed at the training of skilled workers,
usually on the basis of basic general education. Vocational training for certain
occupations may be based on secondary (complete) general education. Educational
programmes for persons wishing to take up vocational education after basic
general education are different from those offered to persons who have finished

vocational

The first kind of vocational education is offered by vocational education

programmes can be shortened), however this type of vocational education does not
give the right of access to university level higher education.
The second kind of vocational education is offered by vocational education
institutions called Professional Lycei (Professionalnye Litsei). In these institutions,
educational programmes, in addition to the professional education component, also
include a general education component (educational programme of the tenth and
eleventh grades). After passing the State final attestation, graduates of a
Professional Lyceum are awarded diplomas that not only give them the right to
exercise a profession but also indicate that they have received secondary

50 years ago people didn't even heard of computers, and today we cannot
imagine life without them.
Computer technology is the fastest-growing industry in the world. The first
computer was the size of a minibus and weighed a ton. Today, its job can be done
by a chip the size of a pin head. And the revolution is still going on.
Very soon we'll have computers that we'll wear on our wrists or even in our
glasses and earrings.
The next generation of computers will be able to talk and even think for
themselves. They will contain electronic "neural networks". Of course, they'll be
still a lot simpler than human brains, but it will be a great step forward. Such

People in contemporary world can hardly imagine their lives without
machines. Every day either a new gadget is invented or an old one is improved.
Different people appreciate new inventions differently. Some suppose that

absolutely awful as they influence people badly. As for me, I am pretty sure that
gadgets make people`s lives easier.

However, opponents of this point of view are definitely sure that gadgets
affect people negatively. People are reluctant to work due to the influence of
machines. People become lazy and disorganized. They just expect their latest
gadgets to do everything instead of them. Moreover, according to scientists, a great
number of widespread devices produce radiation that can cause serious health
problems. Furthermore, more and more people are becoming addicted to their
modern gadgets, for instance computers, TVs or mobile phones. So, they neglect
their home obligations, work or school and spend all their spare time in front of a

laptop screen or a TV-set. In conclusion, I firmly believe that in spite of all
drawbacks, gadgets have, their benefits are much more considerable, as they save
people`s time and let them enjoy life.

Environmental protection
The protection of nature has become one of the most burning problems of
the 20th century. The Earth provides people with mineral resources, rivers, forests,
fields — everythingthat makes the foundation of industrial and agricultural
production. The development of industry has had a bad influence on the nature of
the whole world. People often do things which pollute land and waters greatly. It is
very dangerous because it damages health of the people.
The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986 caused
radioactive contamination of a vast area around the plant. Soviet statements
indicate that 31 people died as a result of the accident but the actual number of
deaths caused by the radiation is still unknown. More than 100,000 Ukrainian
citizens were evacuated from the city of Chernobyl and other areas around the
reactor site.
Environmental protection is a great concern of the Ukrainian Government.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection was founded in Ukraine. Their tasks are
to control the state of the environment and sources of pollution, to protect the water

resources of Ukraine, to extend the network of nature reserves and to maintain cooperation with international ecological organizations.
Campaign for environmental protection is supported by public organizations and
individuals. The Ukrainian Green Party is very active today. “Zeleny Svit” is the

People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was
not such a serious problem. People lived in uncrowded rural areas and did not have
pollution — causing machines. With the development of crowded industrial cities
which put huge amounts of pollutants into small areas, the problem has become
more important.
Automobiles and other new inventions make pollution steadily worse. Since
the late 1960's people have become alarmed with the danger of pollution.
Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air
can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life.
On polluted soil, food can not be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils
the natural beauty of our planet.
Pollution is as complicated as serious problem. Automobiles are polluting
the air but they provide transportation for the people. Factories pollute the air and

Mechanical engineering has been recognized as a separate branch of

Technological progress
At present mobile phones have become ingrained in our everyday lives and
the majority of people can hardly imagine themselves without cell phones. Is it just
a tribute to fashion or a necessity of a modern person?
It isn’t a secret that today many people feel quite helpless if they have left
their mobile phones at home. First of all cell phones give us an opportunity to keep
in touch with people in any place and in any time (it’s especially important for
businesspeople). Besides, modern mobile phones are multi-function: they provide
access to the Internet, have various games, cameras, memory sticks, etc.
Nevertheless we can’t deny that mobile phones provoke a range of problems.
People have started to see each other less frequently. Mobile communication
requires quite a lot of money and people have to control the amount of money on
their accounts constantly otherwise at the most inappropriate moment they won’t
be able to phone the people they need. But the greatest disadvantage of cell phones
is certainly their harmful influence on people’s health.
In my opinion at the present time mobile phones are an integral part of life
of any person and we can’t stop it. I personally need it everyday for my work and
to keep in touch with my friends and relatives, though I’m aware of its deleterious
influence on my health. But I try to avoid idle talks on the phone to reduce the
influence of harmful radio waves. I try to find the happy mean.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Masha. I have finished school this

Now I know I must work hard to master English. Studying the English

About My Career
I originally became interested in the law during my 9th form when I realised
that my skills as a writer, speaker, and leader — as well as my powers of logic —
would probably serve me well in a legal career. That is why I entered an optional
class where I could have lessons on law twice a week.

the law has further stimulated and reinforced my interest in the law, especially
international obligations and public law, and my determination to pursue a legal

unscrupulous businessmen, as well as their own ignorance of the law, would give

The duty of the lawyer is not only to punish people for various crimes: from

crimes, to fight against evil in our society.
They should help those people, who committed an error (broke the law) to
find the right road in their life. The lawyers protect the rights and legal interests of
citizens, institutions and organisations. I want to help people, businesses to solve

My Future

This May I finish my school and I'm going to enter a university. I’m looking

Speaking about our future house, I want it to be a big, comfortable and
bright one with lots of windows and 2 floors. It would be really great if we had
something like forest or a lake near our cottage.

and a cat, and maybe even a horse.
That is how I imagine my life in future. Now I must work really hard to

Thermal Transitions Temperatures in Polymers
Thermal transitions temperatures are where the polymers change their state
from one form to another just as H2O (not a polymer) is solid below 0 deg C,
liquid between 0 and 100 deg C and gas above 100 deg C. In polymers there are
three main types of such transitions temperatures.
The Glass Transition Temperatures – Tg
Below this temperature polymers are hard and brittle and above this the
polymers are soft and flexible. In injection molded parts, post mold shrinkage will
depend upon where the Tg is in relative to the room temperature and/or service
temperature. If the Tg is above the room temperature and/or service temperature,
post mold shrinkage is minimal. If the Tg is below room temperature and/or
service temperature then post mold shrinkage will continue to take place till
equilibrium is reached (think annealing).
During molding, if you set the mold tempertures too low - below the Tg,
then you will not let the moecules reach equilibrium and the molded part will have
a lot of in-built stress causing failures when a load is applied. The part can also
change dimensions resulting in warpage and/or failures in a final assembly. In
crstalline materials (see below) the Tc is always higher than the Tg and the mold
temperatures should be set close to the TC.

Polymer Viscosity
The study of the viscosity and flow of polymers is called Rheology.
Viscoelasticity
When liquids are subjected to a force, the deformation is permanent. This
property is called viscosity. Viscosity also is an indicator of the resistance to flow.
Liquids are said to be viscous. When solids, example: metals, are subjected to a
certain limited force the deformation is not permanent. When the force is released
the solid recovers to its original shape. This property is called elasticity. The word

Newtonian Fluid
A fluid whose viscosity is not influenced by the shear rate that is being
applied to it. The viscosity remains constant as the shear changes. Shear rate in
injection molding is synonymous to injection speed.
Non-Newtonian Fluid
A fluid whose viscosity changes with the change in the shear rate that is
being applied to it. The viscosity does not remain constant as the shear changes.
All plastics are a combination of non – Newtonian and Newtonian behavior. At

lower shear rates, the plastic is non-Newtonian but as the shear rate increases, the
plastic tends to exhibit a Newtonian behavior. This happens because with
increasing shear rate, the polymer molecules start to untangle from each other and
start to align themselves in the direction of flow. After a certain shear rate most of
the molecules are aligned in the direction of the flow and increasing the injection
speed does not further affect the viscosity.

The carburetor
The carburetor works on Bernoulli's principle: the faster air moves, the
lower
its static
pressure,
and
the
higher
its dynamic
pressure.
The throttle (accelerator) linkage does not directly control the flow of liquid fuel.
Instead, it actuates carburetor mechanisms which meter the flow of air being pulled

When carburetors are used in aircraft with piston engines, special designs

common enhancements for modifying engines in the USA from the 1950s to mid1960s, as well as during the following decade of high-performance muscle
cars fueling different chambers of the engine's intake manifold.
Older engines used updraft carburetors, where the air enters from below the
carburetor and exits through the top. This had the advantage of never flooding the
engine, as any liquid fuel droplets would fall out of the carburetor instead of into
the intake manifold; it also lent itself to use of an oil bath air cleaner, where a pool
of oil below a mesh element below the carburetor is sucked up into the mesh and
the air is drawn through the oil-covered mesh; this was an effective system in a
time when paper air filters did not exist.

Cross-sectional schematic of a downdraft carburetor
A carburetor basically consists of an open pipe through which the air passes into
the inlet manifold of the engine. The pipe is in the form of a Venturi: it narrows in
section and then widens again, causing the airflow to increase in speed in the
narrowest part. Below the Venturi is a butterfly valve called the throttle valve — a
rotating disc that can be turned end-on to the airflow, so as to hardly restrict the
flow at all, or can be rotated so that it (almost) completely blocks the flow of air.
This valve controls the flow of air through the carburetor throat and thus the
quantity of air/fuel mixture the system will deliver, thereby regulating engine
power and speed. The throttle is connected, usually through a cable or a
mechanical linkage of rods and joints or rarely by pneumatic link, to the
accelerator pedal on a car or the equivalent control on other vehicles or equipment.
Fuel is introduced into the air stream through small holes at the narrowest part of
the Venturi and at other places where pressure will be lowered when not running
on full throttle. Fuel flow is adjusted by means of precisely calibrated orifices,
referred to as jets, in the fuel path.
Off-idle circuit
As the throttle is opened up slightly from the fully closed position, the throttle
plate uncovers additional fuel delivery holes behind the throttle plate where there is
a low pressure area created by the throttle plate blocking air flow; these allow more
fuel to flow as well as compensating for the reduced vacuum that occurs when the
throttle is opened, thus smoothing the transition to metering fuel flow through the
regular open throttle circuit.

My vocation
In early childhood children tell their parents whom they would like to be
when they grow up. In school students begin thinking of their future profession.
There are lots of professions in the world, and all of them are interesting and
exciting. So it's very hard to discover your vocation in life.
The choice of profession depends on your abilities. If you are good at
humanities you should choose something in this field. And if you are good at
natural sciences you should choose something closely connected with them. I
would like to become a chemist because I like chemistry. I think that it is a very
interesting subject, but I am not so good at it so I think that I am not suitable for
this profession. Inspite of all I possess some qualities which are needed in this
field.
I think that my future profession will be closely connected with computers. I
am capable to work with them, and I also possess the qualities needed in this work.
They are accuracy, energy, carefulness. But I hesitate if I have enough patience. I
must develop it if I want to become a computer operator. I know that it would be
better to choose a profession of an interpreter or any other occupation connected
with Russian and literature because I am good at these subjects but when I began to
study the computer skills that was what I have been looking for. In our modern
world it's hard to do without computers. They are needed everywhere, and I hope
that my interests in this subject will never change inspite of any circumstances.
