How is the math grade figured?
- homework grades
- math notes - quizzes
- tests
- ADD (Arithmetic Developed Daily)
Areas that will be addressed: decimals, place value,
geometry, area, multiplication, division, measurement,
and fractions
Homework Policy: if not finished upon arriving to class
will result in the lose of recess, a note home and a zero in
the grade book
Will have a weeks notice of any tests: see assignment
notebook
Social Studies




There will be NO European Notebook!
Topics to be covered: Latitude/Longitude,
Landforms, World Cultures/Religions,
Continents (Africa, Asia, South America &
Europe) and Caribbean
Jr. Scholastic will be used throughout the year.
Students need to keep every issue
Graded on: homework, quizzes, tests, &
portfolios
Science



Topics covered: Light and Vision, Sound and
Hearing, Plants, Oceanography, ChemistryAcids, Bases and Salts, Physical Science-Elements
and Compounds, Animal Life, Moons and Tides
Graded on: Portfolios, quizzes, and tests
Included in every chapter are several hands-on
activities and experiments that reinforce
concepts
Language Arts/Spelling



Language has an integrated
Reading/Language and Spelling book
Parts of Speech, DOL, Types of Sentences,
and Different Types of Writing
Compositions (Persuasive, Personal
Narrative and Descriptive)
Spelling Tests will be given on Thursday in
students’ homerooms
Reading

Basal Reading Series and Novels
Basal Themes: Courage, What Really Happened?,
Growing Up, and Ancient cultures
Novels: The View from Saturday and Egypt Game,
Integrated Novels: Daniel’s Story (SS) and The Cay (SS
and Sci)
Vocabulary
Graded: Comprehension Quizzes, Vocabulary,
Projects, Tests, Worksheets, Group Work
AR Reading





Minimum of 3 books per nine weeks
Students need to read books within their ZPD Level
(zone of proximal development), which is figured
from the STAR Reading Assessment Test-given the 1st
week of school, January & May
Goals are set according to their reading ability
AR is only a small percentage of their reading grade
Approximately 30 minutes in class silent reading time
daily and we encourage 30 minutes reading time at
home

Focuses on small group and individual instruction for
Reading, Language Arts and Math
Provides modified instruction and accommodated tests
for Social Studies and Science
Reading: Use of CARS, which gives students practice in 12
important reading strategies
AR Program, book talks and books on tape will cover a
variety of Reading Genres.
Language Arts: DLR, Portfolios, & Rubrics
Math: STAR Math, in addition to review will cover
Geometry & Measurement, Fractions & Decimals,
Calendar & Time and Ratios and Percents
Mohican Outdoor School







3 Trips: fall (Sept 21st), winter (Dec 6th) and spring
(TBA)
Cost: $10 each for fall and spring trips, Board of
Education picks up the winter fee
Need Parent Volunteers to join us
1 school day, not overnight
Pack a disposable lunch, old clothes, change of shoes
and BOOTS!
Dress in LAYERS listen to the weather reports
Will receive further information closer to the date

Cover Books with brown paper bags (Hawkins’
bags are good!)
Start looking through pictures that you are
willing to use for the Head autobiography
FYI for the Heads autobiographies the cheapest
place for color copy photos is Mail Box Plus
