Name _________________________________________ Hour _________ Chapter 2: Transformations STUDY GUIDE & HOMEWORK PACKET Enduring Understandings (Know these concepts to do well on the test!) In congruent polygons, corresponding sides and angles are congruent A figure with line symmetry can be folded over a line so that the two halves match In a reflection, the image is congruent to the original figure, but the orientation of the image is different from that of the original figure In a translation, the image is congruent to the original figure, and the orientation of the image is the same as that of the original figure In similar polygons, corresponding sides are proportional and angles are congruent A dilation is a transformation that changes the size of a figure, but not the shape The notation used to describe a dilation includes a scale factor and a center of dilation. A dilation of scale factor k with the center of dilation at the origin may be described by the notation (kx, ky) Similar figures are produced from dilations A scale factor bigger than one will produce an enlargement of a figure, while a scale factor less than one will produce a reduction in size Two similar figures are related by a scale factor, which is the ratio of the lengths of the corresponding sides Congruent figures have the same size and shape. If the scale factor of the dilation is equal to one, the image resulting from the dilation is congruent to the original figure Vocabulary (Make flash cards) Congruent figures Corresponding angles Corresponding sides Transformation Image Pre-image Translation (slide) Reflection (flip) Line of reflection Rotation Center of rotation Angle of rotation Equations & Key Ideas (Make flash cards) Congruent ≅ Similar ~ Similar figures Dilation Center of dilation Scale factor Our math book Engage New York: 8th grade math https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-8-mathematics-module-1 Module 2: The concept of congruence Module 3: Similarity Supplementary Resources: Big Ideas: www.bigideasmath.com Click on the blue bar that says "Looking for Easy Access Materials?"
