Children born in the camps were generally killed on the spot, especially if the child was Jewish. Children were mainly vulnerable in the era of the Holocaust. The Nazis backed killing children of "unwanted" or "dangerous" groups in accordance with their ideological views, either as part of the "racial struggle" or as a measure of preventive security. The Germans and their collaborators killed children both for these religious reasons and in retaliation for real or alleged one-sided attacks Who was affected? The actual number of children who died during the Holocaust will never accurately be known. Guesses range as high as 1.5 million, including more than 1.2 million Jewish children. In addition, tens of thousands of Gypsy children and thousands of handicapped German, Polish French, and Eastern European children were also murdered while under Nazi rule. In 1933 Nazis passed a law allowing for forced sterilization of those found to have genetic defects and passed another law allowing beggars, the homeless, alcoholics and the unemployed to be sent to concentration camps. HOW DID IT CHANGE THE WORLD? For the 12 years that Germany was ruled by the Nazi Party, a central belief was that there existed in society, certain people who were dangerous and needed to be eliminated for German society to flourish and survive. Over time and locale, these people varied. They included Gypsies, Poles, and Russians, but always and most centrally, the Jews. The Nazis condemned the Jews to death and there was no escape. No action they might take, no change in their behaviour or their beliefs, made the slightest difference regarding their death warrant. At every stage of the war, the Germans used their military superiority to crush and bully the Jews. Above all was the threat of massive reprisals. Hundreds were shot for the resistance of a single person. Thousands of Nazis and their assistants combed the cities and countryside of Europe Is WAR IS NESSARY?
