Territory

Lived on the northwestern
coast of Oregon all the way
up to the islands and shores
located in the Alaska
Panhandle. Used waterways
as their source of travel,
communication, and trade
between tribes. Because of
the heavy rainfall and humid
rocky coastlines, the
geography was described as
a rainforest.

Enviorment/Landscape

The people of the Northwest Coast lived on the edge of the great evergreen
forests. The climate of the Northwest Coast is temperate and damp. Currents
warm the ocean, which tempers the prevailing winds. The warmed air is
trapped by the high peaks of the Coast Mountains, preventing cold,
continental air from dominating the climate. The mountain barrier also blocks
the vapor-laden breezes, creating abundant rainfall, as much as 100 or more
inches a year, and a lush evergreen forest.

Food







The Tlingit were really good fishermen
Before spring hunting they’d hold a
“First Foods” Ceremony that thanked
the Creator for the bountiful harvest,
then after they were allowed to hunt
They eat salmon, eulachon and
halibut, salmon was the most
important to them
They’d eat berries in the summer
They hunted and trapped fox,
porcupine, marmot, otter, mink,
beaver, squirrel, lynx, rabbit, weasel,
muskrats, and raccoons, they also
hunted birds, ducks, geese, and their
eggs.
They’d use bow and arrows and
spears
And they would makes canoes to use
to hunt seals, sea lions and otters

Clothing





The Tlingit wear
ceremonial robes called
“Chilkat” robe
They can be multi-colored,
with fur, and fringed
The robes represent
animals that are important
to the family or town
They wore hats made of
roots, and men and
women wear nose rings
Some even had tattoos
and disks in their lower lip

Housing

In the Northwest, Native American cultures lived in a shelter
known as the plank house. The plank house was made
primarily from wood pieces found along the wooded areas
near the sea or water body. Villages were semi-permanent
in that they were used all winter long and then taken apart to
provide housing for the summer months. During the winter,
these houses were located near the sea, but with the advent
of spring, the houses were dismantled and relocated near
rivers for the spawning season of the local salmon.
