AP Biology Summer Assignment (2015-2016)
Welcome to AP Biology. Last year the College Board revised the AP Biology course to include more
laboratory and scientific method related activities. Therefore, the learning of scientific concepts outside
of the classroom will be crucial to the success of the student. The successful AP Biology student will
complete all assigned readings and homework in preparation for concentration of class-time on lab
activities.

AP Biology Test prep book
Calculator
Lab notebook
Notes book and folder (separate from lab notebook) OR 3 ring binder, 3 sections (notes,
handouts, worksheets)
Daily Access to the internet
Blue, black, red, highlighter pens
Flash cards (a constant supply will be required for each unit we learn)
Sticky notes (for interactive reading)
Summer Assignment – There are 3 parts.
This assignment will require the AP Biology Textbook “Biology, Ninth Ed., Sylvia Mader”, access to
Youtube on the internet and approximately 20 hours of dedicated time. The 20 hours of time can be
interrupted, however the time to complete the following tasks should be in a quiet area, uninterrupted
by outside distractions. You will be watching podcast lectures from the Bozeman Biology channel on
Youtube.
Assignment:

Read and take notes on the following sections in the AP Biology textbook (Biology Ninth
Ed, Sylvia Mader.
sections 1.3 & 1.4 pg 8-15. Testing yourself questions #1-22, pg 16-17.
sections 2.1 – 2.3 pgs 20-32. Testing yourself questions #1-22, pg 32-34.
sections 3.1-3.5 pgs 36- 53. For chapter 3, each section notes should include answers to the
following questions for each of the 4 Macromolecule types: Carbohydrates(3.2), lipids(3.3),
proteins(3.4), nucleic acids(3.5) . Testing yourself questions #1-34, pg 54-55.
o What is each macromolecule name?
o What the macromolecule made of (both the elements and the simple monomers that
make up the large polymer macromolecule)?
o What is the importance of the macromolecule in living things?
o What are the different forms of the macromolecule?
o Name and describe at least 3 examples of each macromolecules.
Complete the Testing Yourself Questions for each of the previous Chapters.
When each chapter section (as outlined above) has been read and noted, complete all of the testing
yourself questions for each chapter. Study these questions, There will be a test on the summer
assignment chapters on the third day of school.
