Mrs. O’Connell’s Parent Newsletter Week of 4-20-2015 Hello, Congratulations to Ashley, Connor, and Ray for their performance in Friday night’s talent show. They were all awesome! A shout out to Ray for winning 2nd place in the 3rd act. I am so proud of all of them. April 24-Field Day ( 5th grade from 11:00-2:00) April 28—John Brown Orchestra May 1st-- Lakeshore Middle Orientation (done during our school day) May 4th- week for CA testing May 14th - Progress Reports May/25 - Memorial Day Can any of you provide a cooler full of water bottles for Field Day? It would just be for our class then you get your cooler back. This week in School: Reading: We will be working in literature circles on our novels. We have four different guided reading groups. All of the books have a time travel theme. Skills: theme and character traits. Vocabulary: Our vocabulary words this week are 5th grade words the children may see on the EOG’s The students have the first 20 words on the list this week and the next 23 words next week. It might seem like a lot but the children have been exposed to these words during the school year. ( examples: fact, infer, bold print, plot). The children can practice the words on my webpage on quizlet. The students can also practice taking the test online. https://quizlet.com/11354240/5th-grade-reading-eog-flash-cards/ We will have an online test next Friday, May 1st on Quizlet. Spelling: Spelling test is on Thursday due to Field day on Friday. Grammar: We will have lessons on prepositions and interjections. Writing: The children will be working on an ecosystem probe due Friday, April 24, 2015 Math: We are practicing dividing fractions, area and perimeter with fractional units. We will have a fraction test on Friday. Science: The students did such an amazing job presenting their ecosystem group project. Check them out on my web page. We have our big ecosystem test on Tuesday. Please remind your child to study. I will be introducing our last science unit force and motion. Homework for week of 4-20-2015 Science: study for ecosystem test. Math: fraction worksheet pages. Reading: read 20 minutes each night. Vocabulary: practice words. Writing: Ecosystem probe due Friday.
