Ask LLs which parts are involved in the digestive process. Do they know what any of them are called in English? Give LLs Worksheet 1, which they do first individually before checking their answers with their partners. Then check answers with the whole class. In pairs, one LL covers her/his activity sheet so that only the pictures can be seen, and the other LL points to pictures and asks the first LL to name them. Then they switch roles. Give LLs Worksheet 1a, which they should complete individually, without referring to Activity 1. They then check their answers in pairs, before class feedback. The key vocabulary items are reinforced by watching a short youtube video (2:24) that explains the digestive process and the body parts involved. The LLs will not understand everything at this point, but will do more work on this video later, as homework: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCn5uvvc3WE 40-50 minutes - identify the names of body parts - identify some functions of body parts - list the different stages of the digestive system in order -LLs can name body parts from pictures -LLs can place body parts in the order of their involvement in the digestive process -LLs enjoy competing to see who can name the most parts and/or finish most quickly Internet connection Overhead projector Worksheet 1 Worksheet 1a Back to Top CLIL4U 537672-LLP-1-2013-1-DK-KA2-KA2MP Page 2 of 5 Activity 2 Procedure Approx. time Learning outcome Indicators Materials Give LLs Worksheet 2 (4 pages) Page 1: The teacher asks LLs to look at pictures. What can you see? What is the text probably about? LLs read text quickly (3 minutes) to get the gist. Tell them they don’t have to understand every word. Page 2 and 3 Part A: Write sentence on board, drawing attention to the highlighted words. Tell LLs that this is a “defining relative clause”. LLs then look for other examples in the text. Parts B and C: Referring to the text, LLs do the exercises individually, before checking answers with partner. Teacher monitors activity, then checks with whole class, focusing on any problems noted. Part D: Do together with the class, eliciting the correct option for the rule. Part E: Putting the rule into practice. LLs do this in pairs. Part F: LLs all write sentences using relative pronouns and relative adverbs. Teacher monitors and corrects individually, closing the activity by eliciting sample sentences and writing them on board. 50-60 minutes Understand the use of relative pronouns and relative adverbs (who, whose, that, which, when, where) Know how to use these relative pronouns and relative adverbs in defining relative clauses. Identify when a relative pronoun can be omitted from a defining relative clause. LLs can find relative pronouns in texts. LLs can match relative pronouns to their types of usage. LLs can construct meaningful sentences using defining relative clauses. LLs can omit relative pronouns when possible. Give each pair one of the halfcrosswords (A or B) Worksheet 3ab. The LLs work together to write clues for the words that they see on their crossword. For example “The stomach is the place where .......”. If necessary, do one example together with the class. When all the pairs have written clues for all their words, divide the class up again, so that 1 student with clues for Crossword A works together with 1 student who has clues for Crossword B. These new pairs must now complete their respective crosswords, based on the clues they give to each other. 30-40 minutes Write definitions of body parts using relative pronouns and adjectives. Recognise body parts from definitions given orally. SS complete the crosswords. The text of the video is transcribed in the bottom left part of the page, and all the words are linked to an online dictionary shown on the right side. LLs can therefore watch the video as many times as they want, reading the text and clicking on any unknown words, until they are sure that they have understood everything. They will then be ready to complete the related Hot Potato exercises, accessed by clicking the “Go to exercises” button at the bottom of the page. 10 minutes in class, then unit completed as homework (approx. 30 - 40 minutes). LLs can watch a film, read the transcript and discover the meaning of any unknown words LLs understand the digestive process and can identify and name the body parts involved in the various stages of the process.
