Role Models Gone Bad
I had four big role models that turned rotten: Miley Cyrus, Amanda Bynes, Lindsay
Lohan, and Britney Spears. They used to be portrayed as beautiful sweet young woman. It’s truly
sad how the girls I used to look up to took a wrong turn. I wasn’t the only girl who grew up
watching these celebrities. There were millions of other girls that did the same and looked up to
them. Now, they are girls that are the farthest things from role models.
Miley Cyrus is an American actress and recording artist. She became a teen idol when
she landed the lead role on the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana. In 2007, she
signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Miley started changing her image. She
went from innocent pop star to a more grown up girl when her music video “Party in the U.S.A.”
came out. Then later, her third album Cant Be Tamed came out. She was then known for more
prominent dance elements, and was promoted through sexually-themed performances. In 2013,
her single “We Can’t Stop” came out and the music video was extremely provocative. Miley did
a performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music awards that was appalling and inappropriate that
had everyone talking. But she isn’t the only girl who made a different name for herself that
wasn’t good.
Amanda Bynes is an American actress who has gone downhill. Her first roles that lead
her to her celebrity status were The Amanda Show and All That series. It was a Nickelodeon
show. Amanda was a cute, funny girl who other girls looked up to and watched. She’s been in
several films including She’s the Man, Hairspray, What a Girl Wants, Sydney White, and Easy
A. In 2012, she was arrested and charged for driving under the influence after side-swiping a
police car in Hollywood. Later in 2012, she was charged for two so-called hit and run incidents.
The following year she was arrested because she was in the possession of marijuana, and because
she was accused of throwing a bong out the window. At this point, I was saddened by all the
news about the girl who I looked up to. She has made many statements on twitter that have many
people questioning her sanity. On twitter she has many inappropriate pictures of herself with her
top off and covering her cleavage with her hands. Her actions, and the way she presents herself
to the public are wrong. Just like Amanda and Miley, there are more girls that took the similar
path of being a bad role Model.
Lindsay Lohan used to be amazing. She’s an American actress, model and recording
artist. Her first big role was as a lead in the movie The Parent Trap. She was amazing in that
movie. Lindsay was about age eleven during the film. She was known for being cute, bubbly,
innocent and outgoing. Other big movies she starred in Freaky Friday, Mean Girls and many
other movies. I looked up to her. Lindsay just continued to show that she was funny, young and
beautiful. Somewhere along the line, she took a nasty turn and got into drugs and alcohol.
Around 2007, she was put on probation for driving under the influence and had three visits to
rehabilitation facilities. Because of all this it caused her to lose several movie deals in the past. In
2010, she went to rehab three times, and Lindsay found herself entangled in legal problems.
Some of those problems were from misdemeanors and probation violations. It felt as if she went
from being a role model for young girls, to being a girl who was known to be in all sorts of
trouble.
Lindsey isn’t the only one trouble follows, it also follows Britney Spears. Britney is an
American recording artist, singer-songwriter, entertainer, dancer, and actress. Her first albums
became international successes. Britney was beautiful and was known for being the “Princess of
Pop.” She seemed like she had it all. Her career was going strong and she was extremely
popular. Around 2007, she publicized her personal struggles which sent her career into hiatus.
Her erratic behavior and hospitalizations continued. At one point she was tremendously paranoid
that her hair had traces of hardcore drugs that she was using. Britney had a liking for crystal
meth. She was scared that her hair would be tested for drugs, and when positive, she would lose
custody of her children. As a result, she shaved all of her hair off. Britney was given a
Conservatorship. A conservatorship is a legal term in the United States of America, where a
guardian has to manage the finance and daily life of a person. By this time, her reputation was
ruined.
The girls who I used to respect so much mean nothing in my eyes now. I watched them as
I grew up. They used to be portrayed as something good. Miley Cyrus, Amanda Bynes, Lindsay
Lohan, and Britney Spears are the role models that went bad. They are people, and people
change. They all created a reputation for themselves. What makes them think that the way they
act and present themselves is okay? We will never know the answers. But with the life that they
have, they got spoiled. But what they had and the opportunities it gave them wasn’t enough.
There are other ways to have fun. And there are ways to present who you are. When I think
about it, they are the farthest thing from role models. Somewhere along the line, they grew their
own morals and values that most of the world sees as wrong.
