differently?
What could have been some alternatives?
If you were in the situation of Johnny and Ponyboy, who would
you turn to for help? Why do you think they turned to Dally?
Why do you think Johnny and Ponyboy’s situation prompted
Ponyboy’s recitation of “Nothing Gold Can Stay”?
Chapter 5
On pages 76-77, Ponyboy wakes early, sits on
the steps of the church, and watches the
approach of dawn. He says he wishes he “had
some paint to do a picture with while the sight
was still fresh in [his] mind.” (pg. 77)
When Johnny arrives, Ponyboy
makes an allusion to Robert
Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can
Stay” and recites it from
memory.
Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
