Royal Society of Chemistry – Gold for Gold
Date:
December, 2012
Introduction to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Gold for Gold Initiative:
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) recognises that researchers are often being asked to publish
Open Access (OA), but do not have the funding to pay for it directly.
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Gold for Gold pilot, enabling RSC Gold subscribers in the UK to
publish RSC papers free-of-charge via Gold Open Access (OA), was a direct reaction to researchers
being asked to publish OA, but without necessarily having the funding to do so
To support the funder-led evolution to Gold OA, and following a successful pilot scheme in the UK,
our Gold for Gold initiative rewards all institutions that subscribe to RSC Gold with voucher codes
to make papers available via OA, free of charge.
Gold for Gold ensures academics can further increase the visibility of their quality research, whilst
raising their institution's reputation. Early beneficiaries from the UK pilot include: the University of
Hull, Queen's University Belfast, Birmingham University, Aston University and University of
Southampton.
Eligibility for Gold for Gold:
Libraries that take a subscription to RSC Gold, or are a part of the RSC CAUL three-year offer for RSC
Gold may apply for Gold for Gold.
Please note this initiative is only available to RSC Gold customers. Authors at non-RSC Gold
subscribing institutions can still publish an article via the normal channels, but this is subject to the
normal APC fees. Alternatively they can buy voucher codes in bulk at a discount. These are valid until
the end of 2014.
How does Gold for Gold work:
Participating institutions need to nominate a representative to oversee the distribution of Gold for
Gold voucher codes. This may be a librarian or someone within the chemistry/research department.
Once decided, the RSC needs to be informed who the representative is by e-mail. We will then let
the representative know how many voucher codes are available for their institution, as well as
providing the voucher codes themselves.
The elected representative is therefore responsible for managing and distributing voucher codes
within their institution.
