Topics include linear, quadratic, polynomial, radical, and rational equations; systems of linear equations; rational exponents and polynomial factoring; rational and radical expressions; complex numbers; and graphs of linear and quadratic functions. COURSE PREREQUISITES: Within two years prior to beginning the course, either successful completion of MATH 0931 or MATH 0960 with a grade of P, or MCC placement test. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course each student will be able to: 1. Graph linear functions, graph other basic functions, define a function, and use function notation. 2. Expand upon operations involving exponents, polynomials, and the methods of factoring. 3. Solve systems of equations and apply them to solving application problems. 4. Simplify rational expressions and solve rational equations. 5. Simplify radical expressions, solve radical equations, define rational exponents, (manipulate and convert from exponential to radical notation and vice versa), and perform operations with complex numbers. 6. Solve quadratic equations with real and complex solutions. CLASS STRUCTURE: The daily class period will consist of review of material and questions from the previous class, presentation and discussion of new material, and time for practice and tests. REQUIRED MATERIALS: You must have daily computer and internet access and basic computer skills. You must purchase a MyLabsPlus access code and register in MyLabsPlus (MLP). The options for purchasing the materials are: Online Textbook Only: Pay for access online or purchase an MLP registration code packet at the bookstore. This option provides access to the online textbook; a paper text is not required. Online and paper copy Textbook: Purchase a package that includes both an MLP code and a three hole binder text book at the South Omaha campus bookstore. Textbook Title: Author: Publisher: Intermediate Algebra 4th Edition Carson, Jordan Pearson Scientific (non-graphing) calculators may be used. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK ASSIGNMENTS: Daily assignments must be completed following the due dates as listed in the Schedule of Assignments at the end of this syllabus. Work for all assignments must be kept in a notebook and brought to class each period. MyLabsPlus Homework (10% of quarter grade) Homework assignments are not timed and may be resumed numerous times until they are completed. Three attempts are allowed for most questions. Click Save when you have completed the assignment or need to stop. You may revisit an assignment any time up to the due date and continue working if you click on Save each time you need to leave. Submitted homework can be reviewed from the grade book. MyLabsPlus Quizzes (15% of quarter grade) There are 2 attempts for each quiz. Only the highest score will be used for the average. Quizzes are timed. Once you start you must finish, and you must stay on that assignment. Submitted quizzes can be reviewed from the MLP grade book. Tests (75% of quarter grade) There will be 4 in-class chapter tests. There will be an in-class final. MAKE-UP TEST PROCEDURES: If you are unable to take a test at the scheduled time, you must contact the instructor within 24 hours of the date the test was administered in order to qualify to take the test. The make-up test must be taken prior to the next class meeting. You are allowed ONE make-up test with no penalty. After that, 10 points will be deducted from tests not taken at the scheduled time. Make-up tests will be administered in the South Omaha testing center, Connector Building room 102 (402-738-4613). Call the Testing Center to confirm their hours. You must have a photo I.D. and arrive at least 2 hours prior to close to take your test.
