8th Grade Family and Consumer Sciences- Course Syllabus Miss Damato- Email: headam@bhasd.org, Website: http://heatherdamato.bhasd.org/ Overview: 8th grade Family and Consumer Sciences is a 45 day course during one semester that provides an introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences, including child development and food preparation. The program is set up as in introduction to the curriculum offered at the high school. The Child Development section examines the skills and understanding students need to become good caregivers. The section focuses on infants, toddlers, and preschool age children. Lessons on child care skills, safety, play and literature, child developmental milestones and positive guidance are included. The Foods section introduces students to basic cooking equipment and the skills that are necessary to prepare foods in a safe kitchen environment. Lessons included cover safety and sanitation, kitchen tools, large and small appliances, etiquette, table-setting, food pyramid guidelines for meal planning and cooking labs. Textbook and other Resources used: Textbook- Young Living (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill- 2000). Resources- handouts, packets, notes, etc. Outline of Content: This is a 45 day course that meets every other day during either the first or second semester. First Quarter- Child Development Ages and stages, Child’s play and safety at each developmental stage, Children’s literature, Learning environment for children, Role of a caregiver Projects and Tests: Verbal toy presentation, quizzes on lessons, end of unit test, learning plan Second Quarter- Foods Food safety and sanitation, Safe work environment, Kitchen utensils, Following recipes and directions, Measuring ingredients, Meal management, Balanced menus, Labs and demonstrations for cooking and baking using a variety of healthy foods Projects and Tests: Cooking labs, quizzes on lessons from textbook, evaluation of meals Class Rules and Expectations: 1) All BHMS rules (reference BHMS Student Handbook) apply in Miss Damato’s class. 2) Be on time to class. If you’re late, make sure to have a pass. 3) Come prepared to do FCS activities. Have everything you need (sharpened pencils, paper, etc.) before class begins. 4) Respect each other. If you have any issues, talk to Miss Damato ASAP. 5) To eliminate confusion, only one person will speak at a time (students and teacher). 6) Wait until Miss Damato is done to pack your belongings. Remain at your seat until you are excused from class. 7) You are responsible for you! If you’re absent from class, make up your work within 2 class periods. 8) If you know you’re missing class for any reason (field trip, vacation, etc.) let Miss Damato know ahead of time and get any missed work. 9) Any test, quiz, work, etc. that is not made up from an absence will result in a grade of “0”. 10) The grade you EARN will be based on assignments, projects, use of class time, presentations, quizzes, tests, labs, and class participation. 11) Any work which is not your own (copying, cheating, etc.) will result in a grade of “0”.
