describing or centered around life today, the
way OT passages centered around life at the
time. From your table group, make sure there
is one history, one prophecy, and one poetry

The Overall Story of the Bible
Introduction
The Bible has an
amazing composition.
•
•
•
•
Written over 1600 years
Written by over 40 authors
Written on 3 continents: Asia, Africa, Europe
And it all fits together coherently!
The Bible says it reveals
what we need to know.
•
•
•
•
Who God is
God’s good intent for the world
What’s gone wrong with us and our world
How our lives and world can be restored
through God
The Bible reveals these things through
telling a big, overall story.
• Though containing many teachings and
smaller stories, an overall story emerges that
gives the big picture of how God is redeeming
humanity.
• Knowing this overall story helps us make
better sense of the Bible’s parts too. (Analogy
of a novel)
OT Structure
• There are nine “eras” of the Old Testament:
– Creation – the world being made/formed
– Patriarch – start of Hebrew people through
masculine heads of houses
– Exodus – ending Hebrew slavery, leaving Egypt
– Conquest – Hebrew people taking their promised
land when they return from Egypt
– Judges – 400 years of being ruled by judges
– Kingdom – 400 years of monarchy
– Exile – 70 years being led by outsiders
– Return – exiled Jews coming back to rebuild
– Silence – 400 years before start of New Testament

• Write 4 sentences about how you (personally)
were made (not the bird’s and the bees), and
how it is that you are here now – as if you are
trying to describe to a child who asks
– “how did people get here?”
Creation Accounts
• Every different people group has its own
creation account. In other words, how did the
Earth come to be, and where did people come
from.
• We will be looking at creation accounts of the
Bible and other early people groups.
– Brainstorm the parts that are needed for a
complete creation account.

Short Lesson
• You will be writing a five minute “lecture” on
the first three books of the Bible. This can be
about one book or an overview of all of them.
• You will have time today, and time next class
before presenting the class after that.
• You will have note cards or a short bullet point
list, but you cannot READ it.
Day 9 Bellringer
• How can you get someone’s attention quickly?
• Examples of attention getters
Day 10 Bellringer
• Should we believe everything we hear?
• WE WILL BEGIN PRESENTATIONS TEN
MINUTES AFTER THE BELL
• Validity – what does that mean?
• How can we tell if something is valid?
Presentation Notes
• You will be writing notes while they present.
You need 1 thing you learned, 1 question you
have, 1 thing they did well, 1 thing they need
to improve.
Day 11 Bellringer
• What’s the longest road trip you have ever
been on – was it (the travel) fun?
Numbers-eronomy
• Numbers – details the 40 year journey
through the wilderness. We can get bogged
down in a lot of history, but the purpose is to
show the eventual freedom from exile.
• Deuteronomy – the “second law,” this book
establishes the new way of life for the Jewish
people as they are once again on their own.
There are a bunch of laws, but the point is to
show that God wants a freedom for his people
that they have not been experiencing.

Newspaper Article
• You are going to write a newspaper article
covering the battle as if it just happened. First,
we will look at two examples of real articles
after battles, then you will write your account.
• This will be a daily grade, but can be a test
grade if you do really well.
• BATTLE OF ANTIETAM CREEK.; Full Particulars from Our Special Correspondent.
The Most Stupendous Struggle of Modern Times. The Battle Won by
Consummate Generalship. The Rebel Losses Estimated as High as Thirty
Thousand. A GREAT NUMBER OF PRISONERS CAPTURED.
• Published: September 20, 1862
• BATTLE-FIELD OF ANTIETAM CREEK,
• Thursday, Sept. 18, 1862.
• Another great battle has been fought, and the cause of the Union has once more
been vindicated upon one of the most bloody and well-contested fields known to
ancient or modern times. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1862, will, we predict, hereafter
be looked upon as an epoch in the history of the rebellion, from which will date
the inauguration of its downfall. On that day about one hundred and sixty
thousand men met in deadly strife upon the field of Antietam -- a name which
will occupy a leading position in the history of the war -- and there, marshaled by
brave and able men, fought with a desperation and courage never before
excelled, and rarely, if ever equaled, for twelve hours, leaving the Union army in
possession of the contested ground. This victory was not gained, however,
without the sacrifice of many valuable lives, and the maiming of thousands of
individuals.
• PRECEDING EVENTS.
Day 12 Bellringer
• What Biblical character wore a “coat of many
colors?”
Story of Joseph
• Starts with story of Jacob/Israel
– Jacob steals his brother’s blessing
– Jacob marries two sisters – only kind of his fault
– Jacob ends up with 12 sons (four baby mommas)
• Jacob loves his second youngest, Joseph, best
– Joseph was a “dreamer” but no, really he was
– Joseph was used to “spy” on his brothers
– Joseph was given a pretty jacket
• Things get real
• Joseph goes to the field to check on them
– They see him coming, steal his jacket, beat him
– They first decide to kill him, then sell him instead
• Jacob (dad) is sad, now Benjamin is his fave
• Joseph, in slavery, starts interpreting dreams
– The king starts using him
– He becomes the king’s right hand man
• Brothers need food, they go to him (unknown)
– He recognizes them, gives food, sets them up
– He tests them, but also makes sure his bro is OK
– He reveals himself and shows mercy, not revenge
Cycle seen in Judges
• God’s people wanted someone in charge (why
is that a problem)
• God gave them judges to judge/settle issues.
They fell into a pattern of sinning/doing
wrong, then needing help and coming back to
God (like that boyfriend you know you should
leave, but he comes back so cute looking)
Find 5
• Find 5 instances in the book of Judges of God’s
people turning away, then coming back when
they needed help.
Day 13 Bellringer
• What is the role of women in the Bible
Ruth
• Ruth tells the story of a woman who marries
into a Jewish family, but then her husband
dies. She goes back to Bethlehem with her
mother-in-law, which is not necessarily the
smartest thing to do. She ends up marrying
Boaz, and their son is Obed, whose son is
Jesse, whose son is David…yep, THAT David.
D’Ruth-tavia
• You are going to rewrite Ruth in a modern
telling. It needs to clearly be the same overall
story, just in today’s terms. We will share the
best few.
Test
1- Who was Ruth’s great grandson?
2- What battle did the book of Joshua describe?
3- What book details the “second law?”
4- Who wore a coat of many colors?
5- Who was his^ dad?
6- What do his brothers do to him?
7- What does he do to anger them?
8- What cycle is repeated through the old test.
9- What group of people is in charge in Israel?
10- Who does Ruth end up marrying?
Day 14 Bellringer
• Who is David in the Bible (if you don’t know,
look it up). Answer with 2-3 sentences
Getting to King David
• Who was in charge/ruling in Israel?
• Who led in nearby areas?
• What is good/bad about that?
Kings?
• What are good things about kings
• What are bad things?
Timeline from Saul to David
• Once Israel decided to get a king, God gave
them Saul. How did he become king, how did
he lose his position, and how did David take
over?
• You will make a timeline with ten events – this
needs to go in order and show how David
became king, starting with Saul becoming
king.
• Video on David in history
• Write a one page paper about what we know
about David, and specifically comparing the
historical view of him to the Biblical view.
Day 15 Bellringer
• Who is David (we will compare today to last
class’ thoughts)
• What makes a good leader or a bad one?
• Examples: Obama, Clinton, Bush II, Jason
Garrett, Caesar, Washington, Hitler, Dr. Lamb
quiz
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Who was his father?
What was his birth order
How was he described b/f goliath
What made him think he could win
What was his weapon
Who was his best friend
How did he become king
Who was “the girl”
What did he do to her husband
What made him noted in God’s word
First Paragraph
• You are going to write the first paragraph for a
paper about David, as if writing a long essay
on him. The paper needs to be researched, so
you will find sources (that must be good ones
to use), and the paragraph needs to reflect the
body of the faux-ssay
Day 16 Bellringer
• Why is so much time spent on David in the
Bible?
• Video clips
• discussion
