Three basic positions on the eve of war:
1. Declare and fight for complete independence
2. Remain loyal to Britain and the crown
3. Assert self-governance, but seek to do so
without fighting a war; this country is best
served by remaining allied to Britain

Historical hindsight is 20-20: we cannot judge the
past according to what we have learned over the
course of time – we must make the effort of
understanding historical events within the
contemporary contexts of the individuals making
their decisions.

Obviously, the founding fathers chose to declare
independence from Britain, launching a military
action that eventually led to the creation of a new
country.
The Declaration of Independence is heralded as one

You have been provided with an essay that relates to the
drafting and adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
The essay discusses the views of a moderate, John Dickinson,
who at the time of the American Revolution opposed a break
from Britain. In an essay of a recommended length of 400-500
words, respond to the prompt below. In your response, quote
or paraphrase at least once from the Declaration of
Independence and at least once from the article. Observe
MLA conventions in citing these sources. The essay will
include the author, title, and publication information. You
should merely count the pages when citing the location of
materials that need to be cited.

PROMPT: The first paragraph of the Declaration of
Independence states that this very public explanation of the
“causes” for the “separation” is given out of “a decent
respect to the opinions of mankind.” With reference to the
position of political moderates as described in the essay you
have been given, consider the extent to which the
Declaration of Independence recognizes and responds to
their concerns. Does the Declaration of Independence
respond to the moderates’ concerns and what evidence can
you cite to support this claim? Or, did the Founding Fathers
ignore those who dissented? Again, if you adopt this
position, provide evidence to support your claim.
