Optimist Friends,
First Lady Shawn and I send you heartfelt greetings from our home in Topeka, Kansas. We look forward to working
closely with each of you during the 2015-16 Optimist year. The Wisconsin North-Upper Michigan District has a
tradition of excellence and I am confident that you will have a fantastic year under the leadership of Governor
Gregory Goodchild.
Growing up in an Optimist family, I learned that our Optimist Clubs are both a wonderful inheritance left to us by
prior generations, as well as a wonderful legacy we will pass to future generations. Regardless of where we are
from or what our official titles may be, all Optimists are members of one family and we must work each day to
protect our inheritance. Moreover, Optimists around the world share a common mission—to bring out the very
BEST in youth, in our local communities, in our Clubs, and in ourselves—Right Here, Right Now!
I look forward to seeing each of you at the 2016 Optimist International Convention in Quebec City to be held from
June 30-July 2. It is fitting that Quebec City is a City of Explorers because together we will gather together at the
Convention to "Rediscover Optimism." In the meantime, each of us must renew our "Commitment to Youth" as
well as our "Commitment to Growth" to reach our goal of 100,000 Optimist Members by our 100th Anniversary in
2019. By doing so, we will be able to serve over a million more children!
Best wishes to all of the Members of the Wisconsin North-Upper Michigan District as we work together to bring
out the BEST in the children we are so blessed to serve—RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

It is my pleasure to serve as Vice President of the Great Plains Region, the only region that starts with
GREAT and goes from there. I look forward to the opportunity to visit each of the districts and meet many
of the GREAT Optimists we have!
During the 2015-2016 Optimist year, we’re going to be riding the Energy Bus and exploring “10 Rules for
the Ride of Your Life”. I would encourage you to check out the book by Jon Gordon if you haven’t
already. Your governor and I would very much like to have you on the bus with us as we strive for
GREAT things in the coming year!
I was proud to be among those delegates who approved a resolution for a new logo design and branding
statement during the 97th Annual Optimist International Convention in New Orleans this past
summer. Not only does it make us stand out more…it also acknowledges that we’re still in this thing
called Optimism to bring out the best in youth, but also our communities and ourselves…and when are
we doing it?...
“Right Here… Right Now”!
Do you have a BHAG for your club, zone or district? If not, I’d encourage you to develop a Big Hairy
Audacious Goal this year…something that causes you to stretch yourself as an Optimist member and
leader in your community. By now, you’re probably aware that Immediate Past President Ken Garner
went “all in” during the OI Convention in Las Vegas with the vision of ”100 By 100”. That’s 100,000
members by our 100th Anniversary in 2019. President Dave Bruns and President-Elect Jim Kondrasuk
have committed to work toward that vision as well. Like all good goals, it has a time line and we’ll know
if/when we reach it. It’s a BIG goal…definitely audacious…and one we need everyone’s help to achieve!
How do we reach such a goal? I think it can only be done by striving to “be fearless” in our efforts to
recruit new members and build new clubs. What does it mean to “be fearless”? In short, we need to:
1) Set audacious goals (i.e. don’t sell ourselves, our clubs or our districts short),
2) try new things early and often (and don’t be afraid to go first),
3) make mistakes matter and fail forward,
4) Reach outside our Optimist bubble and take help anywhere we can find it, and
5) Don’t let our head get in the way (i.e. don’t overthink)…just do it!
I look forward to the opportunity to visit with you about these and other things in the year of GREAT things
ahead!

Hello Fellow Optimists;
Your new team has been installed for the coming year. You may ask: ‘Who they are?’ The team
consists of all of you Optimist Members. Remember, we are a bottom-up organization. You as
the members are the team that runs the organization. It is your input to both the District and
Optimist International that decides what it is that we do.
Our theme from International is: ‘Optimists. Bringing out the best in kids – Right Here; Right
Now.’ The emphasis is to do it better each year. All of our past Governors have tried to do so. To
that end your installed officers and chairs have come up with a mission to succeed in that goal.
MISSION
Our mission is to make our District better than it has been in the past – as each Gov. has tried to
do.
Therefore, our ‘Theme’ for the coming year is: “Dream Big – Make It Happen.”
How are we going to accomplish this, you may ask? Several Goals have been put forth to
accomplish our mission. They are as follows:
GOALS
First: We ask that all Clubs do their utmost in increasing their membership. We would like to see
every member to try and recruit one new member to the Club in the hope that each and every
Club ends the year, at the least, plus one for the year. This includes getting the President’s Pride
and the President’s Citation forms completed and handed in on time along with having your
finances done in a timely manner. Also to have the officers election report sent to Optimist
International by the end of May. NOTE: for those Clubs that have elections later than May, or do
not have new officers selected at that time, send in the current officer names in May and then
send in the new updates to OI at a latter date.
Second: We would like to see each Club appoint a Club Foundation Representative (CFR). We
need more involvement with OI in order to have the necessary means to carry out our mission as
Optimists. We would like to see every Club do the ‘Dime – A – Day’ program. It is the
foundation that provides our scholarship money, training materials and funds everything that we
do.
Third: Our WINUM team has committed to building three new Optimist Clubs this year.
Fourth: There will be an emphasis by the team to have greater participation in the ‘Personal
Growth Improvement (PGI) program. This program helps to build future leaders for the
organization. We need to have the next generations prepare themselves to take the place of those
of us who will someday age out of the organization. We can’t wait until the last minute on that
one. This applies to both your personal Clubs and the District.
How is this to be done?
A new chair has been created for the coming year. It is called the ‘Club Fitness Chair’. In the
past we have talked about membership, leadership, new Club building and PGI. We then
appointed chairs for the positions and each went their separate ways. This will no longer be the
case.
The leadership, new Club building, membership and PGI chairs will be coordinated together as a
larger team under the auspices of the Club Fitness Chair. There will be communications with the
Lt. Gov. and Club presidents in order to determine where we can help the Clubs to improve. This
may be in the area of membership, District involvement, member retention etc. The coordinated
chairs under the Club Fitness Chair will then develop a plan to best help those Clubs to do it
better.
NOTE:
Please understand that just because a Club is notified that a coordinated effort will be made to
help them, this in no way is to suggest a condemnation of the Club or a judgment about the Club.
We hope to approach as many Clubs this year with the intent of having us all improve what we
do.
What is my job?
My position will be as the bus driver on our journey. My job is to keep you as the team members
on the road to arrive to our goals. It is my job to get around the road hazards that we may run
into and see that we get to where we want. I’ll be in constant contact with you and will be there
to help you get to the end of the trip.
