NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA Contractor)
A Special Health Authority formed in 2006 to manage a range of key national services which directly
support the front line of the NHS, accounting for approximately 20% of the total national NHS budget.
Joined as a Business Analyst (contractor) to assist in the delivery of several high-profile, high-risk
projects, all with strict implementation deadlines. Worked as part of numerous project boards sized from 3
members to 15 members, consisting of senior stakeholders including directors and heads of department.
Project examples include:
1. Annual Allowance
 A compliance project initiated to ensure NHS pensions provide over 1.5 million scheme members with
accurate information regarding their pension’s annual allowance as per HMRC regulations.
Necessitated change to the Pensions database and front-end Pensions processing application
(Penserver) prior to the development and implementation of a statement printing solution.
 Liaised with key stakeholders from the Scheme Compliance Unit and the processing team to represent
both in technical application development meetings. Such stakeholder engagement was used to clarify
stakeholder priorities and expectations.
 Responsible for requirements gathering as well as documenting requirements, incorporating UML, and
Visio process flow diagrams. MoSCoW analysis was applied to clarify requirements priorities.
 Used gap analysis to create a collective understanding of Penserver ‘As is’ and Penserver ‘To be’.
 Documented print solution requirements from which UAT test scripts were derived.
Achievements:
 Appointed to resolve ambiguity around business requirements and project documentation due to my
attention to detail and ability to build rapport with stakeholders. Scheme member statements were due
to be distributed in September 2013, in accordance with national pensions legislation, thereby
preventing NHS Pensions from incurring fines for non-compliance.
2. Commercial Shared Services
 The project aimed to provide NHSBSA Commercial with the ability to carry out their work from
multiple sites and from remote locations.
 Responsible for requirements gathering (IT hardware, IT infrastructure and IT support) to facilitate
Commercial’s day to day work as well as to future proof Commercial’s IT needs. Also, for a solution
enabling the NHSBSA Commercial to share confidential documentation with approved NHS
organisations and approved non-NHS organisations via a secure-central document repository.
 The project incorporated technical discussions with internal IT solutions architects as well as with two
external IT suppliers, clarifying the business requirements and over-coming technical issues before
potential solutions could be outlined and communicated back to the business.
Achievements:
 Selected for extensive experience in Stakeholder management and in working with 3rd party suppliers.
The requirements document produced was signed off, providing NHSBSA Commercial with the
foundations of a solution that will facilitate the Service Level Agreement with NHS England.
3. Student Bursary Fraud
 Initiated as part of NHS protect's aim to prevent profiteering. Analysis of bursary applications within
NHSBSA revealed further measures might be implemented to prevent fraudulent bursary claims.
 Produced a business case that justified possible solution expenditure in comparison with the potential
savings in bursary fraud all the while ensuring that NHS student bursaries remained non-discriminatory
and free from prejudice.
 A solutions-options section included options cost estimates as well as a cost-benefit comparisons.
 SWOT analysis was used to assess the strength of each option as well as the risks with each option.
Achievements:
 Appointed to raise the profile of the project amongst senior stakeholders. The business case has since
been successfully submitted to senior-management within student bursaries for approval and sign off.

Responsible for providing IT support to Community-based NHS employees, assisting clinical staff in their
day to day duties, improving processes and making efficiencies where possible.
Joined as a Business Analyst / Project Manager to assist in the delivery of several high-profile, high-risk
projects. Working as part of several project boards, from 3 members to 15 members.
Whilst employed at SOTW I worked on a number of projects for example:
1. IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) – Implementation of IAPTus System
 An NHS programme approved by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for
treating patients with depression and anxiety disorders, with the goal of helping people into work
 Organised and co-ordinated business process modelling workshops to develop an understanding of
business processes As is and processes To be. The ‘To be’ process was to be facilitated by ‘tailoring’
the ‘off the shelf’ software application IAPTus.
 Produced business requirements documentation which was passed to IAPTus developers to
communicate how the application was to be tailored for Gateshead’s mental health team.
 Produced UAT scripts and conducted UAT training and testing for Gateshead mental health staff.
Achievements:
 Documentation produced accurately reflected the business processes required. Consequently, IAPTus
was successfully implemented as the primary application used by the Gateshead Mental Health Team.
Chosen to work on this project due to requirements gathering skills and communication skills.
2. Lone Worker
 As part of the PCT’s responsibility for the health and safety of staff at risk of verbal/physical abuse
whilst at work the PCT provided security devices to over 1600 community health services staff.
 Requirements gathering from key stakeholders including Director of Business Strategy and
Performance
 Negotiated the end of a supplier contract, sourced a new supplier, negotiated a new contract,
established new and improved business processes, facilitated and carried out staff training.
Achievements:
 Appointed due to experience in Stakeholder Management as well as ability to work as part of team
identifying risks and issues. The project was successfully delivered via a new supplier ensuring
compliance with national Lone worker legislation and the provision of a higher level of protection
and security for over 1600 staff.
3. Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group : Improved working through IT solutions
 As a result of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 £60 -80 million of NHS health-care funds has been
transferred to several hundred local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). This project aimed to
provide more time-efficient, cost-efficient ways of working for Gateshead CCG.
 Requirements gathering for the provision of new IT hardware (Iphones, Ipads) to the CCG to improve
ways of working, Requirements gathering ensuring software applications are fit for purpose and secure
 Requirements gathering for the provision of video conferencing via specialist equipment, laptops,
Ipads and Iphones across the secure NHS N3 network.
Achievements:
 As a result of the business analysis carried out high-profile CCG stakeholders were able to work
‘smarter’ via portable, secure IT hardware and a reliable, robust IT infrastructure. Consequently the
CCG made budget savings and time savings through remote data access and the facilitation of video
conferencing meetings.

Northern Rock was a retail bank that specialised in Savings, Mortgages and Insurance Products. The bank
was bought out by ‘Virgin Money’ in 2012.
Joined as a Business Analyst to work as part of several project teams from 3 to 10 members. These
consisted of senior stakeholders including directors, heads of department and IT solution architects.
Project examples include:
1. E-commerce: Offshore retail savings websites (Ireland and Guernsey)
 The bank initiated the development of offshore retail E-Commerce savings websites in Ireland and
Guernsey so as to progress site functionality and improve the overall customer experience.
 Responsible for requirements gathering to upgrade E-Commerce savings websites from senior
stakeholders within the savings department and from branch staff based in both Ireland and in
Guernsey. Used Visio to reflect business process flows and wire frames to reflect website screens.
 Gap analysis exercise between the existing system and system functionality desired from stakeholders.
 Produced process flow diagrams and use case models to reflect the business processes.
 Negotiated comprises between senior stakeholders where there was a requirements mismatch.
Achievements:
 Selected to work on this project due to previous experience as web-site designer. Both the Ireland ECommerce retail savings website and the Guernsey E-Commerce retail savings website were made
live. Customer feedback reported that the changes made to the site much-improved the customer
experience. Site downloads speeds were measured, taking half the amount of download time.
