Jesus is looking for heart-felt lovers.
Verses 15-17:
Mark 11:12-19
Moving Toward Authentic Spirituality
Jesus is looking for spiritual fruit.
12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was
hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see
if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing
but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May
no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.
Text Message:
o The incidents of the fig tree and the temple both have the
same bottom-line message. Both are prophetic actions.
o Notice and then circle the city that Jesus is coming from.
o The city of “Bethany” is rich with meaning. The name can
mean:
1) House of Testimony.
2) House of Activity.
3) House of Humility.
4) House of Singing.
o Jesus is coming from a city that represents all these things,
and is looking for one thing: fruit.
o Historically, Jesus would find no fruit in Jerusalem, as the
religious leaders there would reject Him for a form of religion.
o The lesson for us is that Jesus inspects His Church for
spiritual fruit! (See Revelation 2:1 and following).
Text Message:
o This has been (mis)named “Jesus Cleanses the Temple.”
This was not a temple cleansing, but a temple closing!
o This temporary shut-down of the temple was a prophetic
foreshadowing of the temple’s closing once-for-all in AD 70.
o Jesus mention of a “den of robbers” refers to Jeremiah 7:
“Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal,
murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal,
and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come
and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name,
and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these
abominations? Has this house, which is called by my name,
become a den of robbers in your eyes? Jeremiah 7:8-11
o The same mistake is made today when people hide behind
religious activity without a love for God.
o Are we lovers of God, or simply laborers?
Jesus is looking for a people of prayer.
17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written,
‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But
you have made it a den of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the
scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they
feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching.
Text Message:
o Circle the key words, “My house.”
o In the Old Testament, “My house” referred to God’s temple.
In the New Testament, “My house” refers to God’s people.
o Put in a New Testament context, this could read, “My people
shall be called a people of prayer for all the nations.”
o Therefore, authentic spirituality is demonstrated in:
1) Bearing fruit. For further study: John 15:1-5.
2) Love for God. For further study: John 14:23.
3) Prayer. For further study: Colossians 4:2.
