For more information, go here: http://capmembers.com/cadet_programs/new_cadet_help/cadet-uniforms Camouflage “BDU” Uniform You need one BDU uniform to start. By the time you start going to multiple-day activities (especially summer encampment), you will want to have two sets of this uniform. In the “Woodland camo pattern,” there are summer weights (aka “ripstop”, with a cross-hatch pattern), and winter weights. The winter weight will be heavier material. It doesn’t matter which kind you find, as long as the pants and blouse are the same fabric. Note: You can save money by buying used BDUs at surplus stores. GRCS recommends The Foxhole and Quick Stop GI Surplus in Lakewood, where you can typically find the blouse for $5, and pants for $10-15. If you let an employee know what you’re looking for, they are always happy to help you shop. When buying used uniform blouses, make sure they are free from holes and glue (where the previous owner’s patches were affixed). Common Name BDU cap CAP 39-1 Regulation 5.1.1.8. Headgear. Headgear. Wear of headgear is mandatory. The BDU Cap, the CAP Baseball Cap or the Black Watch cap (when in a cold weather environment), may be worn. Green River cadets only wear the BDU Cap at present, so this is what is recommended and easiest to find. Where to find it 1. Surplus stores 2. Only the Woodland Green camouflage pattern is authorized. Long sleeves may be rolled up; if rolled up, sleeve material must match shirt and will touch or come within one inch of forearms when arm is bent at a 90-degree angle. BDU shirt may be removed in the immediate work area. A black crew neck T-shirt will be worn. Military creases are prohibited. Where to find it 1. Cotton and nylon twill or rip stop cotton camouflage pattern (woodland green) with button front closure, strap ankle adjustment, and six pockets. Material of shirt and trousers must match. Blouse trousers over combat boots. Tucking the BDU trousers into the boot is optional. Whether tucked in or bloused, the trouser must be evenly bloused (gathered in and draped loosely) over the top of the combat boot and must present a bloused appearance. Material of shirt and trousers must match. (I pick up super cheap boot blousers at McChord when I go, since they are only $.25 a pair there. They are usually more comfortable bloused than tucked into the boot, and the cadets have better success with blousing when using them. Note: Blousers are not mandatory, as long as blousing adheres to 5.1.1.5 above). 5.1.1.4. T-Shirt. A black short or long sleeved t-shirt will be worn under the BDU shirt. Unit commanders may prescribe unit designation emblems, subject to the approval of the wing commander, not to exceed 5 inches in diameter, in cloth or silk screen, worn on the left side of chest. Neither unit designation emblems nor commercial logos will be visible when wearing the BDU coat (shirt). 1. Ask your Element Leader if GRCS has your size in inventory 2. Surplus stores 3. T-shirts and turtlenecks will not have pockets and all must be tucked into the trousers. Sleeves of long-sleeved t-shirts will not be visible if BDU shirt cuffs are rolled up. By the time you go to summer encampment, you will need approximately 4 black tees. 1. Vanguardmil.com actually sells plain back t-shirts for $4. Search: “Civil Air Patrol Uniform: TShirt – black” 2.
