Course Description:
Algebra 2 Without Trig is a senior only course where we will extend and apply all of the skills and ideas from your
mathematics high school classes. We will find discover connections between mathematical ideas and purpose in algebraic
expressions and graphs. We will use graphing calculators and other technology to see the relationships and patterns
throughout the learning process. Students will collaborate often to help their skills in communication of ideas and to create
depth of knowledge. During this course we will use material from the Prentice Hall Algebra 2 textbook, NMSI’s Laying the
Foundation, and AMSTI. I want to build confidence in all of my students in their abilities in mathematics and their own ability to
ask questions and take an active part in their learning process. I am always happy to give extra help! I believe that expecting
students to give me their best is important part of their success! Please feel free to contact me at any point in the year!
Classroom Expectations/Policies
-I expect all students to behave in a mature, respectful way towards all teachers, students, and their property at all times.
-I expect students to follow all school rules from the Pelham High School Code of Conduct.
-I expect all students to do the assignments expected of them and to participate in class.
Classroom Write Ups
I will have a classroom write up form for instances when certain behavioral expectations are not met.
1st Write Up- Written Warning.
2nd Write Up- Parental Contact
3rd Write Up- Office Referral
The behaviors that could result in a classroom write up will include but are not limited to the following:
-Eating or drinking in the classroom, failing to attempt bellwork or classroom assignments, persistent off-task behavior or
excessive talking at inappropriate times, saying inappropriate things in the classroom, and writing on desks/not being
respectful of property
Significant Offenses - will result in an office referral and possibly removal from the room:
-Hostile behavior or language toward anyone in the classroom, cursing or talking back in a disrespectful manner to the
teacher, defiance, using certain inappropriate words and phrases
-All cell phone and dress code policies for Pelham City Schools will be enforced in my room.
-Students will receive 5 locker/bathroom passes for the semester. They will be handed out on the second Friday of school
for the first semester and again on the first Friday of the second semester. The students are responsible for keeping track of
these passes. No extra passes will be issued if lost.
Course Requirements and Grading Procedures:
-Please check INOW often and refer to the comments on the individual grades (you may not be able to see the
comments if checked on certain smartphones)
-Tests and Quizzes 60%
Classwork, Projects, Bellwork Presentations 30%
Homework 10%
 Bellwork- The bellwork will be review of skills previously learned in this class. A student will be selected randomly
to present bellwork. The student will receive a zero if they have not attempted the bellwork when selected.
 Pretests- The class before major tests, the students will complete a Pretest, and the students will have the class
period to receive help. They will use this as a study material but it must be turned in completed on the day of the
test 100% complete! If there are work or answers missing for any of the questions, the student will not receive any
credit! (I give the final answers so work is essential for credit)
 Notebook quizzes- given at the end of each nine weeks. They will be in a quiz format to assess correct answers for
bellwork, homework, notes and classwork.
 Homework will be checked daily if it is assigned. It is graded for completion, and I will usually go over the work
and answers in class.
 I will give checkpoint assessments and classwork to assess students often.
Exemption Policy: See PHS Handbook.
Make-up Work Procedures:
-There is a designated table in my room where missed assignments can be picked up and turned in. Makeup homework
assignments can be found on the back board in my room and on my calendar on the PHS website. It is your responsibility to
check these and discuss your absence with me when you return. Homework will NEVER be accepted late unless the
student is absent the day it is assigned. Late homework must be labeled with student name and date it was assigned!
Makeup Tests- must be made up within 2 weeks of the test date. These can be made up during a skinny period, Tuesdays after
school or Wednesday mornings (it is students responsibility to schedule with me ahead of time)
Attendance Policy:


Attendance is the biggest cause of failing grades in my experience. Algebra will not make sense if class is missed on a
regular basis. You are responsible for material missed, and it is more difficult (and stressful) to teach yourself!
Please see the attendance policy in the PHS Handbook. Make sure that excuses are turned in on time!
Digital Procedures/Textbook:
- Students may be given access to school technology during this course to do classroom assignments. Students are allowed
to bring and use their own device for school-related purposes in my classroom with my permission. Students should follow
all technology guidelines outlined in the Pelham City Schools Code of Conduct.
- I have a website with a calendar of assignments. The link can be found on the staff page on the PHS website.
· The text used will be the Prentice Hall Algebra 2 book. Each student will be issued a book. This will be used as a reference
and for homework purposes. The students do not need to bring their book to class unless I say otherwise (advance
notice will be given).
Materials and Supplies Needed:
- The only things that you will need in the course are a pencil or pen and a three ring binder or spiral notebook with folder
pockets. The students will only need a calculator during the Sequences/Series and Statistics/Probability units. Please let
me know if there is a reason that you cannot have a calculator for these units. While a calculator is not necessary for the
other units, students can bring their own scientific calculator after the first unit.
Pacing Calendar: Below is an overview of the units in this course. In parentheses are the standards
covered in those units:
1st Nine Weeks- Equations and Inequalities (12, 12a, 12b, 13, 15, 20, 23) Functions and Graphs (20, 21, 22, 29, 30, 30b, 31,
32, 24) Systems of Equations (33, 33a) Matrices (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 26) *Matrices unit will be finished in 2nd nine weeks
2nd Nine Weeks: Quadratics (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 17, 25, 32, 34) Polynomials and Solving Polynomials (6, 16, 17, 18)
3rd Nine Weeks: Radicals, Composition of Functions and Inverse Functions (19, 24, 27, 30, 30a, 30b, 32, 35, 35a) C
Exponential Growth and Decay and Logarithms ( 30a, 30c, 32, 34, 36) Conic Sections (23, 28, 28a)
4th Nine Weeks: Rational Equations (13, 19, 31) Sequences and Series ( 14, 15) Statistics and Probability (37-46)
Tutoring: I have weekly tutoring times on Tues. 3:10-3:30 pm and Weds. 7:15-7:35 am in my room!!
Please Note- I will at times have school responsibilities that may conflict with tutoring (for example-afternoon
car rider duty). Please check my calendar online-I will post scheduled conflicts prior to tutoring days.
Also note- Syllabus is subject to change.
Please detach and return the portion below! It is very helpful if I have a working email address as this
is the most efficient way for me to contact during the school day!
