CHAPTER 16 The Seven Sacraments Overview of Salvation History Adam and Eve lost grace Christ gained it back with His death We receive sacramental grace through the sacraments Outward signs, instituted by Christ, to give grace The Sacraments Grace is not magic Grace builds upon nature We have to truly receive each Sacrament Each Sacrament has a sign (form and matter) Form – Special words said Matter – Action or things involved Sign of the Sacrament Have the power to do what they signify Efficacious Signs Like a stop sign that actually makes cars stop A mystery of the faith Ex opere operato – “From the work accomplished” Jesus’ saving power gives the Sacraments their power Matter and Form of the Sacraments Baptism Confirmation Matter: Laying on of hands + anointing with chrism Form: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” Holy Eucharist Matter: Pouring on of water Form: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” Matter: Bread and Wine Form: “This is My Body… This is the chalice of My Blood…” Penance Matter: Verbal confession of sins Form: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
