Servants of the Kingdom Chapter 6 A Marriage Blessing/Matrimony The sacrament of Matrimony (marriage) is a public celebration of the love a man and woman have for each other. A married couple’s mutual love is a sign to others of God’s love and forgiveness. A couple must freely choose to marry to be joined together in the presence of Christ. A Marriage Blessing/Matrimony (continued) In the marriage blessing, the husband is told to love his wife as Jesus loves his bride, the Church. The husband is also told to trust his wife and recognize that she is his equal. Holy Orders Followers of Christ who carry on his mission are known as disciples. Baptized men are consecrated in the Sacrament of Holy Orders to continue the work of Christ. To consecrate is to set a person or thing aside for a sacred purpose. At Mass, the priest calls upon the Holy Spirit to consecrate the bread and wine (change them into the Body & Blood of Christ). Holy Orders (continued) Bishops, priests, and deacons form the three degrees of Holy Orders. Bishops and priests bring people God’s healing and forgiveness in the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Penance) and the Anointing of the Sick. Love One Another In John’s Gospel, Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” Jesus tells us to remain in his love by keeping his Father’s commandments. The “greater love” that Jesus speaks of is laying down one’s life for a friend. Jesus says, “I do not call you servants, but friends.” Our Church Teaches The ministers of the Sacrament of Matrimony are the couple to be married. The priest acts as a witness at the marriage ceremony. Only a bishop can ordain in the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Pope John Paul II Pope John Paul II encouraged young people to use modern technology to promote universal justice. Pope John Paul II called for the writing of a new catechism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church was published in 1994.
