(2014). Physical Education Handbook (13th ed.). Boston: Allyn and Bacon. Catalog Description: An introductory course designed to develop expertise in organization of teaching and coaching sports skills. Emphasis is placed on theory, methods and effective techniques of teaching, evaluating and coaching sports skills. Developing detailed lesson plans and writing appropriate objectives will be highly stressed. This course provides the necessary material to meet the following State Department of Education Objectives: 290-3-3-.33(2)(b)1. Demonstrate personal competence in motor skill performance for a variety of physical activities and movement patterns. Objective:b,c 290-3-3-.33(2)(b)3. Demonstrate performance concepts related to skillful movement in a variety of physical activities.Objective:b COURSE OBJECTIVES: a. To orient the student to theory and techniques of teaching and coaching sports. b. To provide opportunities for practical application of knowledge and skills acquired before and during the course. c. To develop the ability to write lesson plans identifying teaching objectives. d. To provide opportunities for the student to teach from their respective lesson plans. REQUIREMENTS Student must make a total minimum point score of 242 out of a possible 341 in order to pass the class. a. Student must make a minimum score of 35 on the lesson presentation in order to pass the class. b. The first graded assignment will be Objectives. 3 objectives will be written for each domain (cognitive, psychomotor, affective) for the selected sport as well as 1 appropriate objective from the Alabama Course of Study. This assignment is worth 46 points and will be due on August 27. c. Lesson plans with stated objectives will be written from your selected sport to be taught to the class along with an appropriate objective from the Alabama Course of Study. Lesson plans must be typed, include enough activities for a 35 minute lesson for 25 6th- 8th grade students, and are due the class prior to the day you teach. Study guides and second lesson plans are due the day you teach (if corrections are needed). If a student fails to turn in a lesson plan a grade of zero will be given and the student will not be able to teach his/her lesson which will result in another zero and failure of the course. d. A study guide from your sport topic will be prepared and an email containing all parts of the study guide must be sent to Mrs. Walker (aturner2@aum.edu) by 10:00 the day you teach. Each member of the group will choose one of the following for his/her study guide: history (1.5 pages), terms (30 in alphabetical order), rules (20), skills progression (3 pages), drills and lead-up games (3 pages). e. On the day of your lesson, all members of the group that are teaching must come to class early to help setup for the lessons being taught. On the day of your lesson presentation, you will provide the instructor with a revised copy of your lesson plan if revisions were necessary. Remember this material must be typed in order for you to receive credit. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date. All assignments must be typed and are due at 10:50 a.m. for lesson plans and Study Guides emailed by 10:00 a.m. on the day your group is teaching. Please avoid wating until the last minute to print out your assignment. Technology will not be used as an excuse for not having your assignment. Assignments should be well planned and neat. Make sure your assignments are bound with a staple or paper clip. Assignments turned in unsecured will receive a deduction of 10 points. Be professional with the work you turn in. f. The student will dress appropriately for class. Be professional in your appearance especially on the day you teach. *Tennis or athletic shoes (Shoes must have non marking soles). *Sandals or flip flops are not allowed. *Pants may not sag to the point your underwear is showing. *Pants may not display words across the rearend. *Shorts are acceptable but the length should be close to the top of the knee. Professional appearance will be strictly enforced. The first offense will result in a warning and the second offense will result in a 10 point deduction in final grade and the student being asked to leave class until he/she can adhere to the class dress standards. If a student is more than 15 minutes late for class, he/she will be marked absent and not admitted to class. Remember one class meeting during this half term is actually two class meetings in a full term. This policy will be strictly enforced. No excuses!!!!!! NOTE: Two (2) tardies equals one absence. If you know you are going to be absent, please communicate that with me as soon as possible. I understand that unforseen events occur, but if you don’t let me know what’s going on ahead of time, I can’t help you. Email is the BEST way to reach me as it will come directly to my cell and I can respond immediately. Also, if you are absent because you are sick, you must return with a dr.’s excuse and it is your responsibility to find out what was missed in class. No texting and cell phone ringing during class. This is considered very unprofessional and will not be tolerated. If this happens during class, the student will have his/her phone confiscated and returned at the end of the class period. If either of these cell phone acts occur again, the student will be deducted 5 points for each occurance from his/her final grade. No tobacco usage in class. NO FOOD OR DRINK (other than water) ALLOWED in classroom or Wellness Center at any time.
