Algebra 2
2013-2014
Shakopee Senior High Mission Statement: At Shakopee High School we are committed to the life-long success of each
member of our school community. We recognize that all of us are global citizens and that understanding is promoted
through interpersonal communication skills and critical thinking. We will achieve success by providing a nurturing,
academically challenging, and technologically advanced environment, characterized by the acceptance of individual
differences and the promotion of individual responsibility and sefl-esteem.
Overview: Prerequisite: Algebra 1A and 1B. This is a two-semester sequential second-year algebra course that
strengthens and extends the basic skills and principles already learned in Algebra 1. The course will explore
relationships and functions of the following types: linear, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, and trigonometric. Other
topics included are sequences and series, probability and statistics. Graphing calculators are required to meet the needs
of the course.
Textbook: Algebra2 – Holt McDougal ISBN 978-0-030-99579-8
Online Textbook: Your textbook is available online along with many other useful resources such as practice quizzes,
homework help, lesson videos, etc… Check it out! Go to my website and click on Online Textbook.

Office Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Materials needed: Textbook, notebook, pencil, and folder. You will also need to have a Calculator. TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI84, TI-84 Plus, or TI-Nspire graphing calculators are all acceptable. (TI-84 Plus preferred) The media center has a limited
amount of calculators for checkout as well. You can also download a digital version onto a jump drive for at home use.
Math Warm-ups/Group Work: Each day there will be either a warm-up exercise or a group activity at the beginning of
the hour when the bell rings. Students are expected to do the math warm-up or activity, which will be presented on the
projector or given to them, and turn in the math warm-up/activity for points.
Homework Policy
While some amount of homework will be assigned almost nightly, teachers will only check students’ finished product
once per week. These weekly checks will be done in two ways and will ensure that students have thoughtfully
completed each assignment. Again, even though homework is not checked daily, it will be impossible for students to
succeed on these assignments without regular completion of assignments.
Homework will be checked for completion once per week. Based on the amount of homework completed, you will earn
0, 5, or 10 points per homework check. The completion portion will be 10% of your total grade.
Homework will also be checked for correctness once per week using a homework quiz. Questions will be taken directly
from questions on the assignments given during the week; however, students will not have access to their homework
during this time. Students will have classroom notes posters visible during these assessments. The quizzes will be 10
points each.
No Homework Passes: Each student will receive THREE “No Homework Passes” for the semester. These will be counted
as full credit on any homework assignment throughout the semester. They may NOT be used on quizzes, tests, projects,
chapter review assignments, or other activities in class. Students may receive extra credit for any passes left at the end
of the semester.
Hallway Passes: You will be given 5 passes to leave the room (per semester) that you may use with my permission at
any time throughout the semester. You may only use these passes at “appropriate” times (not while teacher is
lecturing, during group activities, etc…) Any passes you have left at the end of the semester will be worth extra credit (2
points per pass).
Quizzes/Tests: Usually about two quizzes per unit. One Unit Test at the end of each Unit. They will be corrected and
returned within one day of completion. If you are absent the day of a quiz/test, be prepared to take it when you return
outside of class time, during a study hall, or before or after school.
Test retakes
If you earn a D or F on a test, you will have an opportunity to retake the test. You must find a time to retake the test
before or after school within one week. The highest grade you will earn is a C-.
Grading Weights:
Tests and Quizzes – 70%, Homework Completion – 10%, Formative Assessments – 10%, Final – 10%
Grading Scale: 100-93% A, 90-92 A-, 89-87% B+, 86-83% B, 82-80% B-, 79-77% C+, 76-73% C, 72-70% C-, 69-67% D+, 6663% D, 62-60% D-, 59-0% F
Progress Reports/Grades: I try to make every effort to have grades in by the end of the day and updated for students
and parents to view. Progress reports will periodically be sent home to be signed and returned for points.
