I feel that my mission in life is to use my talents and
strengths to help and care for others. Doing good deeds
and helping people is a big part of my life. My parents
have taught me to be kind and respectful so that is what I
try to do. I try to apply these characteristics to my
everyday life and especially when I am in the mountains.
My mission is to become a pro snowboarder while also
being kind, generous, and thoughtful.
In 1929 he started testing his invention using a
plank of plywood, clothesline, and horse reins for
bindings ("Snowboarding? How Did It Begin?").

Igluski says “In 1963, an eighth grade student from New Jersey called
Tom Sims (who would go on to form Sims Snowboards) created what
he called a "ski board" as a woodwork project.” ("Snowboarding?
How Did It Begin?").
Many people think Sims was a genius designer and shaper but “Tom
Sims was just a skateboarder that wanted to skate 365 days a year”
says Igluski ("Snowboarding? How Did It Begin?" ).

Snowboarding starts to catch on when Sherman Poppen
invents the Snurfer, which was two skis bolted together
with a rope for a handle. Igluski says “He was just trying
to get his kids outside and playing but ends up creating
and selling over one million snurfers over the next few
years”("Snowboarding? How Did It Begin?").

“The Burton-Sims War started in 1978, Jake Burton Carpenter (also known as
Jake Burton) and Tom Sims didn’t like each other, but they helped push
snowboarding into the mainstream consciousness” says the Smithsonian Mag.
Many people think Burton was just a better company than Sims but “While
Sims was a major player in the sport through the early 1990s, he was a surfer
who was more passionate about catching the next big wave than running a
company. Burton, on the other hand, was a businessman passionate about
snowboarding” says the Smithsonian Mag.

I asked my mom the next few questions pertaining to
snowboarding and her encounters.
1.
As a skier, what do you think about snowboarding?
“It looks like fun.”
2.
Were you surprised to see snowboarding go into the
Olympics in 1998? “Yes, it was a big milestone to
see it recognized as a sport.”
3.
Who is your favorite snowboarder, and why? “Shaun
White, he has no limits.”
4.
When was the first time you saw someone
snowboarding? “I saw someone in Aspen CO, about
twenty years ago.”
5.
When you saw the first boarder did you ever think
you would have a son that loved snowboarding so
much? “No, because we lived in Virginia Beach.”

This assignment has taught me a lot about snowboarding and its roots.
Learning more about these pioneers makes me not take for granite all
that I have. I have not only learned about my identity but also those
who have laid down the tracks for me to be able to go out and
snowboard on the weekends. My views of guys like Tom Sims and
Jake Burton have changed thinking they just sold boards and made a
lot of money, but realizing they pioneered it into what it is today. One
advantage of examining your identity is you get to take a step back
and look at everything you are and have.
