MNURP Successfully host a National Consciousness, Identity and Unity

Workshop

The Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace with the support of UNDP has successfully host a two days’ workshop at Kitano Mendana Hotel last Friday.

The workshop is a National Consciousness, Identity and Unity workshop where all stakeholders come together and discussed issues that reflects who are we as a

Solomon Islander.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop proper Permanent Secretary Mr.

Lennis Rukale said Solomon Islands has to be a united Solomon Islands; he added

“I am pleased to open this workshop on national co nsciousness, identity and unity”.

PS said National Consciousness Identity and Unity are concepts that still superficial in the contextual reality of Solomon Islands as an independent states.

He quoted from the late Solomon Mamaloni statement says “ Solomon Islands is a nation conceived but yet to be born” he added this statement has support by comments from Solomon Islander academics and people who study about Solomon Islands.

The common theme from all comments is Solomon Islander identity is already been shaken, because people have more attachment to their home provinces, community and village.

He said we argue that Solomon Islands was cost due to colonial construction and that the geographical linguistic, cultural or ethnic diversity political and historical realities of

Solomon islands already been prove a territory of many nations.

PS added such diversity is a conducive environment for conflicts and the social unrest in 1998 is prove of this fact.

He said because of this prove, there is an enormous need for a national consciousness, identity and unity across the country, commonality across diversity must be emphasized throughout the country, Solomon Islands.

PS Lennis said Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace is mandate to strive for peace and unity in Solomon Islands, have seeing the need to re-enforce national consciousness and identity in the country,

He said absences of national consciousness, identity can contribute in significant way to the on-going effort of peace, stability and prosperity in the country.

Therefore, PS highlighted this preparative workshop will help provide flat form to set up a national consciousness, identity and unity strategy that will bring together diverse cultures, customs and practices in our nation to create a united, vibrant, prosperous and resilience Solomon Islands.

Also at the workshop UNDP handed over 100 Solomon Islands flags to the Ministry of

National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace and Ministry of Education and Human

Resources Development.

The flags will be distributed to Schools purposely to revive the flags raising ceremony in all schools throughout the country offices are encourage to do the same because it is our national identity.
