TECHNOLOGY
INTEGRATION IN
MATHEMATICS
By: Katie Horne
Using technology to build a gap between
abstract and concrete concepts with virtual
manipulatives.
•
Students can use a website that has virtual manipulatives to help them understand: http://nlvm.usu.edu/
• Understand a fraction as a whole
• MCC3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b
equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
• Understand there a different parts of a whole.
• MCC1.G.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the
words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the
whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal
shares creates smaller shares.
• Explain how equivalent fractions are a like and be able to show that.
• MCC3.NF.3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about
their size.

•
Fraction bars
•
•
Fractions naming
•
•
Students will learn to write the fraction corresponding to the highlighted portion of a
shape
Fractions part of a whole
•
•
Will help students learn about fractions using fraction bars
Students will be able to relate parts of a whole unit to written descriptions and fractions.
Fractions visualizing
•
Will help students illustrate a fraction by dividing a shape and highlighting the
appropriate parts.
Supporting Mathematical Problem
Solving
•
Students can use different software programs to gather data and collect data to make
graphs.
•
Graph Club
• MCC2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to
represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together,
take-apart, and compare problems10 using information presented in a bar
graph.
• MCC3.MD.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a
data set with several categories. Solve one-and two-step scaled bar graph to
represent a data set with several categories. Solve one-and two-step “how
many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in
scaled bar graphs.
Supporting Math-Related Communication
•
Mathforum.org-Loti level 4
•
Mathforum.org can be used for any Common Core Math Standard:
•
Just a few:
•
•
MCC4.OA.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 ×7 as a statement that 35 is 5
times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as
multiplication equations
MCC3.OA.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem. For example, find 32 ÷8 by finding the number
that makes 32 when multiplied by 8.
•
Math forum is a great site for students to ask math questions
•
Math forum has problems, puzzles, tips and tricks
•
Math forum has a Problem of the week for different grade levels
•
•
•
Introducing a math topic
Working on it throughout the week
By the end of the week be able to answer it
Motivating Skill Building and Practice
•
Brainpop
•
http://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/rounding/preview.weml
A great way to help with rounding
• MCC3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
•
•
http://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/elapsedtime/preview.weml
A great way to show time
• MCC3.MD.1 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve
word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the
problem on a number line diagram
•
Motivating Skill Building and Practice
•
IPAD APPS-Loti level 4
•
Rocket Math
Allows students to choose a mission and by doing math projects they earn money to buy
accessories for their rocket and then launch it
• MCC2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.8 By end of Grade 2,
know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
•
•
Motion Math: Hungry Fish
Helps build skills in addition and subtraction
• MCC2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.8 By end of Grade 2,
know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

•
Webmath.com
•
•
•
•
Generates answers to specific math questions and problems as entered by the students..
Allows practice problems
Step by step instruction

This selection will show how to compare two numbers using a number line. This will allow you
to tell if a number is larger or smaller than another number, using a number line. To compare
two numbers, type one number into each of the boxes below, then click "Show me."
• MCC3.NF.2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a
number line diagram.

Place Value Connect Four
Match the digits with their correct place values. Connect 4 to get bonus points! Choose memory
mode for an extra challenge!
MCC4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names,
and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each
place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
