Team Trivia IB MATH STUDIES MID YEAR REVIEW How to play There will be three regular rounds - 3 questions per round - each worth 1 points When we start a round, Ms. Profio-Miller will give you all three questions. You are to discuss with your team, do any work on a separate sheet of paper, and write your FINAL answer down on the answer sheet. After 10 minutes, Ms. Profio-Miller will come around and collect each team’s small trivia sheet. If you finish early, please double check your work. Fourth Round The fourth round will be a little different. Instead of each question being worth a point, you will wager your points. You must wager one question for 5 points, one question for 3 points, and the other for 1 point. If you get that question correct, Ms. Profio-Miller adds that amount of points to your team’s score. If you get that question incorrect, Ms. Profio-Miller will deduct that amount of points from your team’s score. How to Win The team with the most points at the end of the game wins! (a little) Extra Credit on the test will be given!! Rules Be an active participant in your group! Please stay seated at all times unless you have Ms. Profio- Miller’s permission. You should only talk to the people in your group. Do not even look in another group’s direction. Be respectful and at a moderate noise level. You should help each other in your group. No name calling, arguing, etc. Failure to follow the rules can deduct points from your team’s score. ? ANY QUESTIONS??!??!??? Let’s get started…. ROUND 1 : Number and Algebra 1. The exchange rate from US dollars (USD) to euros (EUR) is given by 1 USD = 0.753 EUR. Convert 125 US dollars to euros to the following correct to two decimal places. 2. Emma places $18,000 in a bank account that pays a nominal interest rate of 4.5% per annum, compounded quarterly. Calculate the amount after 15 years to the nearest dollar. 3. Write down the numbers in increasing order and circle the irrational number: ROUND 1 ANSWERS 1.) The exchange rate from US dollars (USD) to euros (EUR) is given by 1 USD = 0.753 EUR. Convert 125 US dollars to euros to the following correct to two decimal places. 1 usd/125 usd = 0.753 eur/x eur 94.13 EUR 2.) Emma places $18,000 in a bank account that pays a nominal interest rate of 4.5% per annum, compounded quarterly. Calculate the amount after 15 years to the nearest dollar. 18000(1+.045/4)^(4•15) = $35,220 3.) Write down the numbers in increasing order and circle the irrational number: 1.6x10-19, 9.8 x 10-18, π, 3.5, 0.006073x106, 60730, 6.073x105 ROUND 2 : Mathematical Models 1. Find the equation of the axis of symmetry of y = x2 – 2x – 15. 2. The number (n) of bacteria after t hours is given by the formula n = 1500(1.32)t. What is the initial number of bacteria? 3. Write the equation of the vertical asymptote for the function f ( x) x 2 3 . x2 ROUND 2 : ANSWERS 1. Find the equation of the axis of symmetry of y = x2 – 2x – 15. x = -b/2a x= -(-2)/2(1) x=1 2. The number (n) of bacteria after t hours is given by the formula n = 1500(1.32)t. What is the initial number of bacteria? 1500(1.32)0 = 1500 3. Write the equation of the vertical asymptote for the function f ( x) x 2 3 . x = 2 x2 ROUND 3 : Statistics 1. It is stated that the content of a can of drink is 350 ml. The content of thousands of cans is tested and found to be normally distributed with a mean of 354 ml and a standard deviation of 2.5 ml. If 200 cans are chosen at random, find the expected number of cans that contain less than 350 ml. x 6 8 10 12 14 16 Use data for #2 and #3: y 30 28 27 24 21 20 2. Find ( x , y ) . 3. Find the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and interpret its meaning. ROUND 3 : ANSWERS 1. Normalcdf(small#, 350, 354, 2.5) = 0.548*200 = 11 cans x 6 8 10 12 14 Use data for #2 and #3: y 30 28 27 24 21 2. Find ( x , y ) . (11, 25) 3. Find the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and interpret its meaning. r = -0.989 strong negative correlation 16 20 ROUND 4 After you answer the questions in this round, you must wager one question for 5 points, one question for 3 points, and the other for 1 point ---- write the wager in the line given on your small trivia sheet. You can only use 5 points once, 3 points once, and 1 point once! REMEMBER: If you get that question correct, Ms. Profio adds that amount of points to your team’s score. If you get that question incorrect, Ms. Profio will deduct that amount of points from your team’s score. ROUND 4: Chi Square Test Members of a certain club are required to register for one of three games (see below) Badminton Table Tennis Darts Male 37 16 29 Female 32 10 19 1. Show expected value for females registered for Table Tennis is 11.1. 2. Write the null hypothesis. 3. Find the Chi-Square value. If the critical value is 4.605, state the conclusion you would make using your Chi-square value. ROUND 4: ANSWERS Members of a certain club are required to register for one of three games (see below) Badminton Table Tennis Darts Male 37 16 29 Female 32 10 19 1. Show expected value for females registered for Table Tennis is 11.1. (61•26)/143 = 11.1 2. Write the null hypothesis. H0: Gender and Game preference are independent. 3. Find the Chi-Square value. If the critical value is 4.605, state the conclusion you would make using your Chi-square value. 0.76 is not larger than 4.605, so we would fail to reject.
