6v6 VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
All Stony Brook University students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate. Individuals as well as
teams are encouraged to participate in intramurals. If you do not know enough people to form a complete
team, come to the Department of Campus Recreation to sign up as a "free agent." Participants must have
an IMLeagues account to register for a sport.
All participants must present the Intramural Supervisor with Stony Brook University I.D. to participate in
the games. Individuals not possessing a SBU I.D. card will not be permitted to participate.
ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS!! All teams must have a $40.00 Forfeit Fee on file with the
Intramural Office. Teams will also be required to follow the schedule that is provided for their team. If
your team is unable to attend a game, it is the Manager's responsibility to notify the Department of
Campus Recreation at 631-632-7673 prior to 3:00 P.M. on the scheduled day. This will be recorded as a
DEFAULT. If no members of the team show up, the game will result in a FORFEIT and loss of the
$40.00 forfeit fee. Schedules will be posted on IMLeagues. Regular season games are played Monday
through Thursday from 6-11 p.m., depending on the sport activity.
EXPECTATIONS
It is the responsibility of the Manager to communicate the schedule, rules, and expectations to teammates,
and help get their team members registered on IMLeagues. Managers are also responsible for the behavior
of their team. Teams must adhere to a "2.75 sportsmanship rating" and not have forfeited during the
regular season to be eligible for playoffs. Consumption of alcoholic beverages by coaches, active players,
bench players and spectators is prohibited. Violators are subject to disciplinary action.
Intramural participants may be ejected from a game and suspended from further participation. All teams
are responsible for their spectators. Any unsportsmanlike conduct from spectators will be penalized
against the team they are "supporting". Persons abusing this rule will be banned from the Intramural
program permanently and subject to community standards.
Members of Athletic Teams:
1. Any individual who is a member of a varsity sport cannot participate for the corresponding
intramural sport.
a. Ex. Any member of the 2014-2015 varsity soccer team cannot play in the Intramural
Soccer League for the Spring 2015 season because that individual is currently a member
of an athletic team in that sport. Must be one year removed.
2. Only two ex-varsity letter winners are eligible to be on an intramural team's roster for each
sport in which the student lettered. This rule includes the holder of a varsity letter from a
university or senior college other than Stony Brook University.
SPORTSMANSHIP EXPECTATIONS
Good sportsmanship is an important aspect and expectation of Intramural Sports.
Sportsmanship Rating will be based on the following criteria:
1. A "4" (4 points) will be awarded to a team which demonstrates exemplary sportsmanship and
maintains a positive attitude throughout the entirety of the game.
2. A "3" (3 points) will be awarded to a team if there are no incidents of poor sportsmanship. A
“2.75” average is necessary to qualify for the playoffs.
3. A "2" (2 points) will be awarded to a team when that receives any of the following:
a. A yellow card in volleyball
b. A red card in soccer.
c. A technical foul in basketball.
d. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in flag football or floor hockey.
e. A Verbal warning issued by the umpire in softball.
4. A "1" (1 point) will be awarded to a team:
a. That has one or more players/coach ejected.
b. If players repeatedly argues with an official.
c. If spectators clearly related to the team, fail to cooperate with the Intramural Staff.
5. A "0" (0 points) will be awarded to a team:
d. If there is more than two ejections, fighting, or a forfeit.
A team that receives a “1” or a "0" rating must have their Manager meet with the Assistant Director for of
Intramurals and Sport Clubs the following day to be eligible to play in their next scheduled game.
Teams must adhere to the sportsmanship regulations by obtaining a 2.75 average in the regular season to
qualify for playoffs. If a team’s sportsmanship average drops below the 2.75 average during playoff
competition, the match will automatically be forfeited, the other team will be given the win, and the team
receiving below a 2.75 will be dropped from playoffs. The Department of Campus Recreation reserves
the right to drop any team and/or individual from regular season/playoff competition for sportsmanship
violations regardless of that team's sportsmanship average.
Special Game Situations
1. A team that defaults on the day of the game will receive a 4 for sportsmanship and a loss
2. A team winning a game by forfeit will receive a 4.0 rating and a win.
3. If a game is cancelled before the start of the second half, both teams will receive a sportsmanship
rating up to that point.
Ejected Players
Any player, who is ejected, for any reason, will not be eligible to participate in his/her team's next
scheduled game. Based upon the ejected players’ actions, further disciplinary procedures may be taken.
These decisions are final. Any player or team ejected from a game will be automatically suspended from
the following game and must meet with the Assistant Director of Intramurals and Sport Clubs.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
The following are considered to be evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct: profanity, unnecessary delay of
game, striking, shoving, or threatening an opponent, official or teammate, arguing with officials,
derogatory and abusive remarks toward an opponent, official or teammate, and any action with the intent
to physically injure an opponent.
6v6 Volleyball Rules of Play
Players:
Each team must have a minimum of three (3) players to start the game.
Rosters are final after the last regular season game. Participants may only play on 1 team per Open
League.
Length of Game:
Games will be the best 2 out of 3 matches to 25 points via rally point scoring. (Teams must win by 2
points, with a 27-point cap). All deciding matches are played to 11 points with a point cap to 13. There is
a time restriction of 45 minutes imposed on each game as well to ensure the teams in the games to follow
enough playtime. This is why the 5-minute grace period rule is STRICTLY ENFORCED!!
Mercy Rule:
No mercy rule will be in place for 6v6 volleyball.
Scorekeeping:
Supervisors on duty will keep the score.
Sportsmanship:
Teams must average a sportsmanship rating of 2.75 or better in the regular season to be eligible for
playoffs and maintain at least a 2.75 sportsmanship rating in each playoff game to continue to the next
round.
Rules:
1) If the serving team wins the rally, it scores a point and continues to serve. If the receiving team wins
the rally, it scores a point and gains the right to serve; its players must rotate one position clockwise
before serving.
2) Substitution must be made on the rotation. This means you can sub in a player when you have the ball
ONLY.
3) Players may rotate into the game:
a) If a new player arrives at the game, after the game starts, the player may join in at the end of the
rotation. If you start with 3 players you must end that specific match with three players, new players
may however rotate in.
b) If a player gets injured, the player may be replaced with the next person who is supposed to rotate into
the game. Whenever the injured player feels he/she is capable of playing, re-enter the rotation at the end
of the rotation. If the player is injured again during the match, the player should be replaced in the same
manner, and the player may not re-enter the game. Any player who leaves early is considered an injured
player.
4) In case of an injury (a player being unable to play for more than 15 seconds), either the player MUST
be replaced or a time out WILL be charged to the team.
5) Teams are allowed 1 time-out per match.
6) When there are 6 players on the court, the 3 back row players cannot spike in front of the 10’
attack line. When there are 5 players on the court, the 2 back row players cannot spike in front of the 10’
attack line. When playing with 4 players or less, the person in the server position is not permitted to spike
in front of the 10’ attack line.
7) A team may hit the ball only three (3) times before it must be returned OVER THE NET. A player
may hit the ball only one time before another player must hit the ball. On a block, a team may hit the ball
three (3) times not including the block.
8) The server is allowed one serve and must wait until the referee whistles them to serve. (Any ball that
hits the net and goes over to the opponents’ side on the serve will be considered good and playable.)
9) There is no "blocking" or "attacking" of the serve.
10) Any ball landing on the line is good.
11) Balls may be played out of the net.
12) A player cannot hit the net at any time.
13) The ball may contact any part of the body.
14) Players must play their line positions and cannot cross other players until the first contact of the ball.
15) Overhead obstructions are out of bounds. The basketball backboards and track, however, are
playable and should be played off of, except when the ball crosses the net, which shall be a violation. Any
other obstruction rules will be further explained before every game.
16) The consequence of a fault is a loss of rally. The opponent of the team committing the fault wins the
rally and scores the point.
17) A player continues to serve until the serving team commits one of the following faults:
 The ball does not cross the net.
 The ball passes under the net.
 The ball touches an antenna or does not pass over the net completely between the antennas or
their indefinite extensions.
 The ball touches a player on the serving team or any object before entering the opponent’s team
court.
 The ball lands outside the limits of the opponent’s team court.
