Curriculum Objectives
This course unit introduces students to the beliefs of the Christian tradition, enabling them to explore
the faith as expressed in their local culture within the context and shape of the wider Christian
theological tradition. It provides a foundation for all future theology course units.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
1) Identify the major doctrines within a particular Christian tradition and the forms of local
cultural expression of those doctrines
2) Distinguish the core doctrines from alternatives held in other Christian traditions or cultural
expressions
3) Demonstrate an ability to think and reflect theologically
4) Analyse the writing of relevant theological thinkers and texts
5) Apply insights from their study to Christian life and ministry within their own cultural setting

Assessment Profile
Assessments tasks are designed both to help students attain the unit outcomes and to enable teachers
to assess student attainment. In this unit, the required assessment tasks will enable students to
demonstrate how successfully they can:
1. Written summary of the content and introductory questions of the major themes of Christian
Doctrine, e.g. periodic journal; fortnightly topic summaries; critical review of key issues.

2. Applied Theology Exercise, e.g. construction of Evangelism Tracts for University students
in a local context. [Outcomes 1 and 3]
3. Analytical Essay on a major theological theme or issue of contemporary significance.
