What is Matter made of?
Atoms – the basic particle of which all matter,
EVERYTHING, is made
* A sheet of paper is approximately 10,000 atoms thick
Elements
• Simplest of substances made of only one kind of atom
• Cannot be broken down in anything else
• Represented by one or two letter symbols
• Identified by Physical and Chemical Properties
Molecule – a group of Two or more Atoms held
together by a chemical bond.
*Chemical bond – the force of attraction between two atoms
Two of the same atoms
Different atoms, Oxygen & Hydrogen
Compound – a substance made of Two or more Elements
held together by a chemical bond

Difference between Molecules & Compounds
Molecules are two or more atoms. These atoms can be of the same
element or not.
Example: Oxygen Gas (O2) or Water (H2O)
Compounds are two or more different Elements.
Example: Water (H2O) Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
