Star River Resort is offering a special weekend package for WV Scouts and their parents. This twoday adventure is perfect for WV Scouts who are seeking or have already obtained their whitewater
badges. WV Scouts will gather at the drop-off point at 8 a.m. on Friday. They will board buses that
will take them to the river for an 8:30 a.m. put-in. After a morning of rafting, the group will stop for
a catered lunch and an afternoon of swimming and rock climbing. The WV Scouts will return to
their rafts, where they will continue downstream for another hour of rafting before reaching the
take-out point. A short hike will take the adventurers to their campsite, where they will have a
catered dinner and an evening of fireside activities. Following a night sleeping under the stars, the
group will reenter the river for another morning of rafting. After lunch, the WV Scouts seeking their
whitewater badges will complete their testing while the other participants will ride horse-back
through the fabulous trails along the river.
This summer, for the first time, Star River Resort is offering a wonderful escapade for the parents
of the participating WV Scouts. While the WV Scouts are off on their rafting adventure, the parents
will have the option of taking an overnight adventure of their own. The adult group will be taken by
bus to White Sulphur Springs, where they will visit the world-renowned Greenbrier Hotel. There
will be ample time for the group to tour the grounds, visit the shops, and stroll through the hotel
before being treated to a sumptuous luncheon prepared by one of the greatest chefs in the United
States. During the afternoon, a tour of the bunker built beneath the hotel will be available. This
bunker was built by the federal government as a top-secret facility during the Cold War. It was
designed to be a safe location for members of Congress in the event of a nuclear strike on
Washington. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the Greenbrier, where presidents and kings have
stayed for the last 200 years!
After lunch, the group will travel to historic Lewisburg, West Virginia. The parents will have a
driving tour of the 236-acre Historic District. A guide will describe the historic buildings that bring
Lewisburg much of its fame. A splendid dinner at one of Lewisburg’s many outstanding restaurants
will be followed by an evening of entertainment at Carnegie Hall West Virginia. Following a restful
night in one of Lewisburg’s lovely inns and a hearty West Virginia breakfast, the group will proceed
to Beckley, West Virginia. The group will have ample time to tour and shop at Tamarack. Arts and
crafts from throughout West Virginia are available at this modern facility. After lunch at Tamarack,
the group will travel to Hawks Nest State Park and ride the aerial tramway to the marina at the
bottom of the New River Gorge. They will then travel to the assigned meeting place with the WV
Scout group.
April
The New River flows north from the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina through Virginia and
into West Virginia. Along the way, several warm water tributaries flow into the river, thus creating
a river of unusually warm temperatures. Although it is named the “New River,” it is actually one of
the oldest rivers in the world. Preserved as the New River Gorge National River under the
jurisdiction of the National Park Service, the New River offers two distinct sections that provide
rafting excitement for all ages of adventurers.
The Upper New provides Class I to Class III whitewater rafting action. It also provides unparalleled
beauty as you travel through West Virginia’s mighty canyons. This rafting adventure is ideal for
families with young children and anyone new to rafting. If you want to make this wonderful trip a
bit more “wild,” travel in a duckie. During the past month, Star River Resort has replaced its entire
fleet of duckies. These one- and two-person kayaks provide riders with untold delights as they
spend a day on the Upper New River. Come and have the experience of a lifetime in our new
duckies.
The Lower New runs Class III to Class V whitewater and is ranked number 10 in the world. It has
gained fame for its warm waters and big waves. The excitement on this river will provide a wild and
wonderful day—even for people with plenty of rafting experience. Even the take-out on the Lower
New River is awesome! As you pass through more than twenty rapids on the Lower New River, you
can look forward to leaving the river under the 876-foot-high New River Gorge Bridge.
Whether you raft with us on the Upper or Lower New River, you can count on Star River Resort’s
providing one of the country’s best guides, a delicious catered riverside lunch, and an experience
you will never regret and never forget.
