Individual Work: Step 1: Tempest Summary (10 mins) With the idea of a humourous and extremely short play in mind, write a super-short summary of the play, The Tempest. Step 2: Character Analysis (5 mins) Select 1 character from the play and write an in-depth analysis on who they are and why they are important. What is their purpose in the play and what do they represent? Step 3: Quotation that Reveals Characterization (5 min) Find a quote that highlights your character’s traits/importance at a key moment for them within the play. Explain how this quote is important to your characters’ development in the script. Step 4: Quotation that Reveals Theme (10 min) Find 1 quotation that pertains to 1 theme within the novel. Explain the meaning of your quote, as it pertains to your theme. Step 5: Annotate (1 min) Be sure to annotate your selected quotes in your books! SEND TO MISS JOSSELYN!! Step 6: Elements of Short Stories (5-10 min) Once you are finished, download Elements of Short Stories from the SSD and give it a readthrough. Step 7: Short Story Questions (5 min) With the elements of a short story in mind, write an email to Miss Josselyn with 3 review questions that you could pose to someone in the class, based on one of the short stories we’ve read. We will use these in our next class. Step 8: Debate Check out the debate topics on the next page. Pick a topic for debate and make sure you have a debate partner to counter your argument. Write your topic and names on the board. There shouldn’t be any overlap because we need to cover as many topics as possible. Step 9: 2-Minute Plays Note: We will most likely only get to start on this. We will pick up on these where we left off next week. You will have roughly 10 minutes total to organize a 2-minute summary performance of The Tempest. In groups of 5 or 6, create a super-short play that summarizes the plot of The Tempest. It should really only include the most essential bits of the story, and no direct dialogue from the play. Use your own words for dialogue. You will need to double up on characters. What themes does it pertain to? How is it more meaningful than other pictures? Of Mice and Men Argue that Crooks is the most important character of the whole novel. Argue that Candy is the most important character of the whole novel. Explain how the death of Candy’s dog is the most important example of foreshadowing within the novella. Explain how the death of Lennie’s puppy is the most important element of foreshadowing within the novel. Explain how Curley’s fight with Lennie is the most important element of foreshadowing in the novella. Explain how the incident in Weed is the most important element of foreshadowing within the novella. The Tempest Argue that Caliban is the most important character in the whole story. Argue that Ariel is the most important character in the whole story. Pick a theme from The Tempest and argue that it is the most important one within the play.
