Each student will be
responsible for 10 words in
a vocabulary unit.
Students will create a ppt.
with 10 slides that include
the word, part of speech,
definition, picture, and
sentence.
You may not be presenting
until later in the year, but
you may begin working on
this at any time.



I will announce the due
date for your unit at
least one week in
advance.
You may use music,
sound effects, transitions,
etc in your slides.

Adulterate (v)
To corrupt, make worse by the addition
of something of lesser value
 The city’s water supply was adulterated
by an algae bloom.

Ambidextrous (adj)
Able to use both hands equally well; very
skillful; deceitful, hypocritical
 Since he is ambidextrous, he is able to
shoot with his left or right hand.

Augment (v)
To make larger, increase
 I was able to augment my savings account
by saving an extra $20 per week.

Bereft (adj)
Deprived of; made unhappy through a loss
 Those who treat others with disrespect
may find themselves bereft of friends.

Deploy (v)
To position or arrange; to utilize; to form
up
 The decision was made to deploy troops
as soon as the weather cleared up.

Dour (adj)
Stern, unyielding, gloomy, ill-humored
 My teacher is a dour old woman who
makes us copy sentences out of the
dictionary.

Fortitude (n)
Courage in facing difficulties
 The residents of the Mississippi delta
showed remarkable fortitude during and
after the flood that destroyed their
homes.

Gape (v)
To stare with an open mouth; to open the
mouth wide; to open wide
 Motorists who slow down and gape at a
car accident complicate the situation by
further slowing traffic.

Gibe (pronounced: jibe)
(v) to utter taunting words; (n) an
expression of scorn
 The girl was worried that kids would gibe
her about her old dress.

Guise (n)
External appearance, cover, mask
 The thieves gained entry to the home by
presenting themselves in the guise of
police officers.

Insidious (adj)
Intended to deceive or entrap; sly,
treacherous
 The boys created an insidious scheme to
steal the mascot.

Intimation (n)
A hint, indirect suggestion
 Mom had given several intimations about
where the toys might be hidden.

Opulent (adj)
Wealthy, luxurious, ample; grandiose
 I was envious of the opulent living
conditions of the Kardashians.

Pliable (adj)
Easily bent, flexible; easily influenced
 I kneaded the dough until it was soft and
pliable, and then I ran it through the pasta
machine.

Reiterate (v)
To say again, repeat
 The teacher reiterated the instructions
before allowing the students to begin the
assignment.

Stolid (adj)
Not easily moved mentally or emotionally;
dull, unresponsive.
 The man’s stolid expression makes it hard
to tell what he is thinking.

Tentative (adj)
Experimental in nature; uncertain
 I have tentative plans that I will apply to
Syracuse University.

Unkempt (adj)
Not combed; untidy; not properly
maintained; unpolished, rude
 Waking up late caused her to look
unkempt at school that day.

Verbatim (adj, adv)
Word for word; exactly as written or
spoken
 Copying text verbatim without using
proper citations is considered plagiarism.

Warily (adv)
Cautiously, with great care
 Balancing the gigantic cake, I made my way
warily toward the table.

Summary/Closure

One way to augment word choice scores
in writing is to infuse sophisticated
vocabulary in written work.Vocabulary
study should NOT only consist of
studying words for vocabulary quizzes but
using these words to make sentences
more descriptive.
