APPLICATION for a NON-CREDIT CLASS Q&A What is a non-credit class? A non-credit class offered through Syracuse University has NO credit hours and cannot be used to fulfill any degree requirements. A series of related non-credit classes/seminars/workshops can lead to a certificate of completion from the department. Non-credit classes can be online or in a classroom setting, on or off campus. The class must be sponsored by a Syracuse University Department. Non-credit classes do not need approval of the University Senate. The department sponsoring the class determines the cost of the class. This class may qualify for Continuing Education Units (CEUs), used to renew some professional licenses or allow professionals to keep up on the latest information in their field (see SECTION E for more info). Why should I document my non-credit class with UC? Participants will have an official non-credit transcript from Syracuse University. Non-credit classes appear on a separate transcript from credit classes and do not factor into the credit program requirements or cumulative GPA. A transcript is available at no charge upon request by the participant. Departments will also be able to track classes, participants and grades through the data warehouse using Hyperion, the official University enrollment reporting tool. No more databases! What is the registration and payment process? All participants must register for the class by the registration deadline (predetermined by dept & UC). Registrations will be processed by UC Bursar/Registration Operations only. If registering for a class with a fee, participants are required to pay in full at the time of registration. Credit card info or a check must accompany the registration (RTB does not apply to noncredit classes). All registrations must be received in the UC Bursar/Registration office within 30 days of class completion, no retroactive registration. MySlice Online grading is the responsibility of the individual designated as responsible on this application. Student schedules, grade reports and payment receipts will not be provided by UC Bursar/Registration. Transcripts can be requested by the student after grades have been posted. Transcript request forms are available by emailing bursareg@uc.syr.edu or by calling 315-443-4135. The department is responsible to relay any SUID and NETID info necessary to obtain class access. How do I begin? Complete the enclosed application, supplying detailed information regarding the class. Forward completed application to: Kim Hagadorn, UC Bursar/Registration Operations, 700 University Ave, Syracuse NY 13244-2530 or scan and email to: kahagado@uc.syr.edu Allow 4 to 6 weeks for the application review and class set-up process to be complete. Upon approval, an APPROVAL & SUMMARY SHEET will be completed and forwarded to the Sponsoring Department contact person outlining the class details. A NON-CREDIT REGISTRATION FORM will be forwarded to the individual designated as responsible for distribution and collection of registration forms. When can I advertise my offering? You may begin advertising at any time. However, classes held prior to approval will not be retroactively registered in the approved program. If you are requesting Continuing Education Units (CEUs) be associated with the offering, you cannot advertise the CEU component until AFTER receiving approval. Complete Section E if requesting CEUs. 1 APPLICATION FOR A NON-CREDIT CLASS Provide detailed information regarding your class and SIGN the application. Boxes will expand as you type. If not, skip to SECTION F. Syracuse University follows the criteria, guidelines and required practices of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training ( IACET ) to determine if a non-credit offering qualifies to offer CEUs. CEU Definition: One CEU = ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction. CONTACT HOUR Definition: One 60 minute clock hour of interaction between: Learner and instructor Or Learner and materials which have been prepared to cause learning 3 Contact implies a connection between a learner and a learning source. For the purpose of the CEU, that connection is two-way. The instructor or learning source must monitor the learner’s progress and provide some form of feedback to the learner. This definition applies for face-to-face interaction as well as distance learning programs. WHAT CAN BE COUNTED: The following learning activities are examples of types of activities to include when calculating contact hours for CEU: Classroom or meeting session time lead by instructor and/or discussion leader; Activities, in which a learner is engaged in a planned learning program in which the learner’s progress is monitored and the learner receives feedback. (Examples include, but are not limited to, independent study, computer-assisted instruction, interactive video, website learning and planned projects.) Field trips, projects, and assignments which are an integral part of a learning program Learner assessment and learning program evaluations WHAT CANNOT BE COUNTED: Unplanned, unsupervised, non-sponsored types of learning Academic credit courses Association membership and leadership activities Committee meetings Entertainment and recreation Individual scholarships Mass media learning programs Meetings, conventions exhibitions which attract large numbers of participants, involve different activities and are conducted primarily for information sharing purposes Travel Unsupervised study Work experience Breaks, lunch periods, and periods which are devoted to administrative tasks, such as student introductions and record keeping MINIUMIM HOURS: CEU should not be granted for learning programs that are less than one hour in length. Sessions within a learning program may be of any length. A learning program of short duration, one or two hours, often does not warrant the degree of planning required by the criteria. Caution should be exercised with shorter length learning programs to ensure their adherence to the criteria. The 60-minute hour is standard for awarding CEU. CALCULATING the CEU: Determine the number of contact hours by adding all countable portions of the learning program per instructions above. (Example: a learning program has six 50-minute session with 10 minutes between for setup. The number of contact hours would be computed as: 6 x 50 = 300 total minutes in organized, interactive learning / 60 = 5 contact hours. Divide the number of contact hours by 10 to get he number of CEU. (For the example above. 5/10 = .5 CEU) CEU may be expressed in tenths of a CEU (i.e., 17 contact hours equate to 1.7 CEU; 3 contact hours equate to .3 CEU). Do n t express the CEU past the tenths place. (i.e., if your calculation should be 1.78, express this as 1.8 CEU) NOTE: CEUs will not be approved for a program that is currently seeking approval, or has been approved to offer any other specified type of certification non-credit units or college credit. 4 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NECESSARY TO DETERMINE CEU APPROVAL: INDICATE AN HOURLY BREAKDOWN OF THE CLASS (ie: 9 am–10am = meet &greet). This information can be indicated here or included on a separate sheet. INDICATE THE NUMBER OF CEUs YOU ANTICIPATE WILL BE AWARDED FOR THIS CLASS: INDICATE THE NUMBER OF MODULES INVOLVED (i.e.: seminars, workshops, classes): HOW MANY MODULES A PARTICIPANT MUST TAKE TO EARN THE CEUs: INDICATE IF PARTIAL CEUs WILL BE AWARDED FOR PARTIAL ATTENDANCE OR PERFORMANCE: Please explain how this will be determined. IF ANY MODULES ARE SELF PACED, ESTIMATE THE NUMBER OF HOURS AN AVERAGE LEARNER WILL TAKE TO COMPLETE THAT MODULE Note: CEUs will need to be verified by you before future offerings . Verification involves computing the average time it took 3 students registered during the initial offering to complete the class. That ‘official average’ may affect the number of CEUs approved for future offerings of the class. HAVE YOU REQUESTED APPROVAL FROM A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION TO OFFER THIS CLASS FOR ANY SPECIFIC TYPE OF NON-CREDIT UNITS (OTHER THAN CEUs)? If so, please indicate what type of unit and the awarding organization. Has the application been approved or denied?
