Press release KABA GMBH Access with Google Glass – as simple as 'Open sesame' Essen, Germany, September 23 2014 – How will physical security systems look in the future? Will they be the same or completely different? How will people be identified? How will systems behave in the future? These are the questions for which the Kaba Group's Innovation Management are finding the answers. At Security Essen, the Kaba Group will be unveiling their new technology study, "Access with Google Glass". Visions in the heads of individual scientists and engineers do not, however, amount to user-friendly and practical solutions. These ideas must be continually balanced with the wishes of future users. This is the only way to obtain workable solutions that will meet the customer's actual requirements. There has been much talk of 'wearable computing' in the media over the past few months, with the first devices now available on the market. What trends can we expect with regard to the use of these? Private devices and business equipment have also started to merge, the first devices serving both these purposes being smartphones and tablets. One example of this new 'wearable computers' category are data goggles such as Google Glass, or similar devices made by other manufacturers, such as Meta Spaceglasses or Atheer One. The question now being asked is where these will be used in the future and how they will make life easier for us. Here's one possible scenario: Employees come to work in the morning and walk towards the office door, look at a certain part of the door and it opens without them using their hands. This all happens without there being any reduction in security for the system. They may also get their flexitime balance, reminders of that day's meetings or a congratulatory message for successfully completing a project shown to them on the goggles. On paper this all sounds very nice, but is it so convenient in reality? How fast does this process need to be, how close do you need to be to open the door and what extra functions would be useful? To find this out and gain experience of using the goggles in practice, Kaba has put together a technology study. "We want to work together with our customers to scrutinize these ideas and check their marketability," explains Dr Andreas Häberli, CTO at the Kaba Group.
