Sunroom Curriculum News Language Arts January Math 2016 Happy New Year! Science/Social Studies Writing: Over the next few weeks, students will delve deeper into the art of information writing. Before winter break, students learned about the power of organizing their information into different structures like: boxes & bullets and pros & cons. These structures lead to new thinking about their topic. Students continue to draft their “chapters files” while learning to use transitional phrases and include text features, like maps and diagrams. They will start the revision process soon. Literacy Centers: All of the literacy groups are close to finishing their first group book and will begin a new one. We are also still reading One Crazy Summer for read aloud and listening to Ramona’s World. In centers, we have been working on antonyms and synonyms. We will also be conducting mid-year reading assessments to track everyone’s progress. rd 3 grade: Part of our math time is devoted to learning the 9 lines. We have imaged the 2,3, and 4’s already and will continue with 5-9. Each week a new 9 lines table is imaged while still practicing and blending the previous tables. They’re also being introduced to renaming in multiplication(formerly known as crossmultiplication) beginning with double digit times single digit multipliers. 2nd grade: Second graders have been working diligently learning their math facts in the area of subtraction. Bump & point and mental bump and point are specific strategies we’ve been using in this area. We have also been studying money and playing various games and setting up shop to help reinforce various ways to add and make change with coins and dollars. Subtraction with and without renaming into the hundreds has been an area we have been working on with and without the Dienes blocks. We have also been working on word problems using the Guess & Check and Make an Organized List Strategy. Science / Social Studies: This month we’ll focus on learning about specific volcanoes such as: Krakatoa(composite), Paricutin (cinder cone), Mauna Loa (shield) and Mt. Pelee (dome). Models, eruptions & dioramas are to follow. The Geology unit will end by learning about dinosaurs and fossilshighlighted by our UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology field trip on the 28th.
