YEAR NINE HISTORY | THE MAKING OF THE MODERN WORLD | HISTORICAL INQUIRY: Case study assignment (30%) TASK: Research 3 case studies, one each from slaves, convicts and free settlers. This is to be done gradually (one at a time) as we learn these topics, not all case studies at once. WHAT THIS IS WORTH: Each case study is worth 10% of your assessment for this subject, for a total of 30% overall. METHOD: 1. Create a rich inquiry question about your chosen case study (see notes on Creating rich inquiry questions). 2. Locate 2 primary sources and 2 secondary sources to use as evidence support the answer to your inquiry question. 3. For your sources, make sure you ANALYSE them. This means looking at the: a. Origin of the source: where, when, who created the source? b. Content of the source: what is contained in the source? c. Context of the source: what were the circumstances under which this source was created? d. Function of the source: why was this source created? 4. As part of your collection of evidence, you must also consider HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE. This means considering: a. What is the perspective (point of view) of the person who created the source? How can we tell this from the source? Why do they have this perspective? b. How does this affect the way history is being presented to us? 5. You are to present this in REPORT format, as opposed to an essay. This means lots of headings and signposting, and you MUST correctly reference your research/evidence (see Bibliography notes).
