Grant His real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant when he entered West Point. 1839-43: attended West Point. Ranked 21st out of 39 in his class. He was the best horseman in his class. 1843-53: served in the US Army, rising to the rank of Captain. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant 1848: married Julia Dent 1853-54: Stationed at Fort Humboldt in California. He was forced to resign because of drunken behavior. After resigning from the military he failed at many occupations: Farming, real estate, clerical work… failed at all of these jobs. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant 1860: Moved to Galena, Illinois. He became a clerk for his father and brother’s leather store. 1861: appointed Colonel of the 21st Illinois volunteers. 1861: appointed Brigadier General in charge of the Army of the Tennessee. Johnson. 1869-1877: elected the 18th President of the US – elected as a “war hero” 1870 – signs the 15th amendment – All males have the right to vote. 1876: Indian Wars- Custer’s Last Stand.
