Troy
• Troy is the site of the 10 year
Trojan War. Ulysses was here
fighting to free Helen from Paris.
He developed the plan for the
Trojan Horse which led to the
Greek victory over the Trojans.
Troy
• Ulysses fought at Troy with
Achilles, Menelaus, Patroclus
and Agamemnon against Hector,
Priam and the Trojans.
• The Trojan War lasted 10 years.
• Ulysses learned that 10 years of
war can change a man into a
savage person.
• WARNING: DO NOT GO NEAR
ULYSSES, HE MIGHT HURT YOU!
Troy- Ilium (Turkey)
Archaeological Sight of Troy
http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&l=en&id_site=849&gallery=1&&index=1
• It is the most famous
archaeological site in the world.
Immortalized by Homer in the
Iliad, Troy has inspired great
creative artists throughout the
world ever since.
• The real cause of the Trojan War
was intense rivalry between Troy
and the Mycenaean kingdom,
the prize being control of the
Dardanelles and the moneymaking trade with the Black Sea.
Troy- Ilium (Turkey)
• The evidence of widespread fire and
slaughter around 1250 BC, which
brought Troy VIIA to an end, has led
to this phase being identified with
the city destroyed by the Greeks
during the Trojan War, immortalized
in The Iliad. Troy is the supposed
burial places of these heroes, such as
Achilles, Ajax, Hector, and Patroclus.
• Troy II and Troy VI in particular are
characteristic examples of the
ancient city, with a majestic fortified
base enclosing palaces and
administrative buildings, surrounded
by an extensive lower town, also
fortified.
Ciconia- Ismarus (Bulgaria)
• Ciconia is the first place that Ulysses
and his men stopped to gather
supplies and water after leaving Troy.
Ulysses decided to be a bully, so he
invaded the island. The people looked
so innocent, in their white tunics and
the peaceful landscape. Ulysses
thought that the people were
defenseless, not knowing that they
would fight back. Ulysses and his men
had to leave Ciconia quickly. Ulysses
and his men stayed here for 3 days.
• WARNING: DO NOT STEAL FROM THE
CICONIANS. THERE FORCES WOULD
DEFEAT YOU.
Ciconia- Thrace (Bulgaria)
• Walk on the island of Thrace, the
modern day Ciconia. You can see
ruins from when Ulysses and his
crew invaded the Ciconian’s
island and stole what they
pleased.
• His men fled to the ships after
the Ciconians got revenge and
attacked back at Ulysses.
• You should not steal what
belongs to others.
Lotus Land- Western Coast of Africa(Then)
• The people who live on that island
gave Ulysses men lotus flowers.
These flowers put them into a deep
sleep in which they forget their
families and why they wanted to
leave. All they wanted to do is eat
the plant. Ulysses had to drag them
back to the ship and make sure
that they could continue their
journey back home to Ithaca.
Ulysses and his crew stayed there 3
days.
• WARNING:DO NOT EAT THE
FLOWERS, UNLESS YOU WANT TO
BE IN AN ETERNAL SLUMBER.
Lotus Land- Western Coast of Africa(Now)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Africa
• There are sixteen countries that
are considered to be the
Western Africa. West Africa is
one of the most diverse and
fascinating regions. It is home to
thousands of native languages.
Cyclops Island- Sicily (Then)
• Ulysses and his men turned into hungry
savages. They had no food and drink supply,
and they came upon this great island. Ulysses
took a dozen of his men to venture. Suddenly,
a great smell of goat lured them into a cave
with a giant Cyclops. Ulysses greeted the
Cyclops and gave him pure wine to drunken
him. Ulysses then made a plan to stab the eye
of the giant and get out of the cave before he
can eat his men. Polyphemus was blinded,
then stomped on one of the men and ripped
one of them apart. Ulysses retreated to his
destroyed ship and shows hubris and he paid
for what he did. Ulysses learned not to show
hubris and feel that he is more powerful than
others. Ulysses stayed at the island for less
than a day, not exactly successful finding
food.
• WARNING: DO NOT GO INTO THE CAVE
LOOKING FOR FOOD. A CYCLOPS WILL BE
WAITING TO EAT YOU.
Cyclops Cave- Sicily (Now)
http://traveltips.usatoday.com/information-sicily-italy-tourists13073.html
The Cyclops’ Cave is in present day Sicily.
Sicily is the largest island in the
Mediterranean Sea. It provides
attractions that show the art, music,
history and cuisine of Sicily. Sicily also
features the tallest active volcano in
Europe, Mount Etna. Sicily has boasting
mild temperatures and wet winters and
dry summers.
Keeper of the Winds- On Tyrrhenian
Sea(Then)
Ulysses and his men saw a giant floating island
blocked by a shiny bronze gate. They met Aeolus, an
enormously fat demigod with a long beard who loved
to eat and hear stories. Ulysses told Aeolus that they
needed a way to get back home to Ithaca. Aeolus was
generous and kind enough to give Ulysses the four
winds so Ulysses can use the bag to get home. Ulysses
told his men not to open the bag. Ulysses fell asleep
and his men selfishly opened the bag and the four
winds escaped causing them to drift farther away
from home. Ulysses should have trusted his men
enough to explain what was in the bag and why they
shouldn’t open it. They stayed at this island for less
than a day.
WARNING:REMEMBER TO USE YOUR CHANCES
WISELY. AT THE TIME YOU DESPERATELY NEED THEM,
THEY WONT BE THERE.
Keeper of the Winds- Tyrrhenian Sea (Now)
http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/tyrrheniansea.htm
• The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the
Mediterranean Sea, located off
of the western coast of Italy.
It's around Corsica and Sardinia,
in the north by the Isle of Elba,
and in the south by Sicily. In
addition to Corsica, Elba,
Sardinia and Sicily, it contains
many popular small islands,
including Capri, Elba and Ustica,
and the active volcano of
Stomboli. Cagliari, Civitavecchia,
Naples and Palermo are its chief
ports.
Cannibal Beach- Paximadia(Then)
• Ulysses and his men had found another
island for the third time not knowing if it
was safe. Ulysses wanted to survey the
island and check to see if it was safe to be
on. He sent one of his men to climb a tree
and when he didn’t return, Ulysses sent a
second man, then a third. None of them
came back, so Ulysses knew something
was wrong. Ulysses decided to climb the
tree himself. As he was climbing, he
realized that the tree didn’t seem much
like a normal tree. It didn’t have branches
and the trunk was the leg of a giant. Not
just as ordinary giant, it was a cannibal.
These giants devoured lots of men.
Ulysses learned to adapt to his surrounds
before he explores. Ulysses and his men
stayed at Cannibal Beach for about 2 or 3
days.
• WARNING:THE TREES ARE ACTUALLY
GIANTS WHO HAVE A TASTE FOR HUMAN
FLESH.
Cannibal Beach- Paximadia(Now)
http://www.angelfire.com/super2/greece/paximadia.html
• The Paximadian islands are two
small islands 12 kilometers off
the coast of Crete, Greece. Even
though this is two islands, from a
distance it looks like one. You
can go on an excursion boat to
tour the islands, as well as go
diving and swimming. Paximadia
is a great attraction.
Circe’s Island- Aeaea(Then)
• Ulysses and his men were hungry and
needed food. They came across an island
that looked like it was full of potential.
Ulysses was very cautious because he
didn’t want to lose any more men. Half
the men went to explore and half the
men stayed at the beach. When Elpenor’s
crew spotted a castle, they were greeted
by a women named Circe. Circe was
polite and treated them to a feast.
Unfortunately for the men, Circe turned
them into pigs. Ulysses came to save
them with a flower given to him by
Hermes to stop Circe’s powers. Ulysses
left Circe’s island. Ulysses learned that he
should resist temptation. Ulysses and his
men stayed here for a few days.

near Aethalia, which is a city on
the island of Elba slightly west of
Italy. This is now a great vacation
destination. It has mountains,
but it also flat. There is bright
blue water surrounding this
area, which makes it a very
beautiful attraction.
Land of the Dead- River Oceanus (Then)
• Ulysses and his men went to the Land
of the Dead because Circe had told
them they had to go there to be
advised by wise ghosts. Ulysses saw
his mother, Achilles, Ajax, Elpenor,
Teiresias and others. They all gave him
warnings about his future travels and
the problems he would face. Ulysses
learned that he should be more
cautious because the ordinary can be
extraordinary. Ulysses and his men
stayed here for less than a day.
• WARNING:THERE IS NO “LAND OF THE
DEAD”, AND THERE IS NO EDGE OF
THE WORLD.

beeswax and he told his men to tie
him to the mast of the ship and he
wouldn’t jump off. Ulysses learned
that he should not give in to
temptation and expect the
unexpected. Ulysses stayed here for
less than a day.

beautiful place and has lots of
things to do such as swimming
and relaxing.
Scylla and Charybdis-Straits of Messina (Then)
• Ulysses remembered that the only way to
get to Thrinacia was to go between the
rocks of the beasts Scylla and Charybdis.
Scylla, who lived on the rock on the right
side, would devour some of his men.
Charybdis, would lived on the rock on the
left side, drink the water and spit it back
out three times a day causing a whirlpool.
Ulysses succeeded to sail down the
middle, getting around the two monsters.

less than a day.

Ino’s Veil- (Then)
• Calypso had given Ulysses a beautiful
tight little vessel making it possible to get
back home. Seventeen days out of
Ogygia, Poseidon put a storm over
Ulysses ship and Ulysses was stranded in
the sea holding on to a piece of wood.
Ulysses almost gave up, however, there
was a Nereid near, Ino. She handed him a
veil that was unsinkable in any storm so
he can swim back to shore safely. He was
able to get to a safe place, but he was cut
and bruised by huge rocks on the way.
