Theoretical Justifications
Persuasive Strategies
• Reciprocity - do well and receive rewards
• Rewards - cash, brands, food, clothes, music
• Pop Culture - privileged access to what’s cool and in
• Scarcity - do well or miss the opportunity for special
prizes
• Positive Feedback
• Consequences
• Peer Pressure
• Authority - parental control

Results of User Testing
•
•
•
We interviewed 2 teens midway through our design process and 3 at the final
stage.
Final stage test - Mina, Michelle and Mike
– Enjoyed mock-up liked visual scenario
– Felt they would be motivated by peer pressure - others have access and they would
not.
– Liked idea of parents distributing allowance through phone
– Strongly re-emphasized need for small sleek phone design - otherwise kids won’t
use it.
– Recommended voice recognition features – Recommended more prizes - sports tickets, clothes,
Mid stage test - Jamila and Jimmy
– Liked overall concept of phone assisting them with academic goals
– Preferred parent monitoring. Though it would “keep it honest”
– Thought movie tickets, gift certificates, concerts, etc… would be highly motivating
– Liked idea of parents distributing allowance through phone
– Emphasized physical phone design - sleek, modern

Slide #24
Shortcomings of Design
• Lack of physical design mockup to show teens
• Lack of parent input
• Difficulty of actually tracking homework
completion
• Questionable how motivating prizes will be in
real life
• Limited market - motivated students, those
who could afford service
• Overly complicated
• Featuritis - too many features
• Amount of extra work for teacher

Expansion - What else is possible?
• Other form factors or ID possibilities
– Smaller simplified versions on sleek and tiny phones
• Other features and interactions
– Grade forecasting
– College information and prep services
– Links to online homework help services
– Rewards based on customer profiles
– Access to tutoring through the phone.

Next Steps in Design Process
• Create a physical design to test on teens
• Find out if companies would subsidize service
for marketing opportunities
• Test with parents
• Investigate ways to connect to student
tracking systems
• Links to tutoring services
• Expand and test motivation level of rewards
