Recommended Coursework: Students applying to RTCC should have achieved junior status.
Additionally, in order to allow students to take full advantage of the program they should also have
completed: all art, health, physical education, and driver’s education credits.
 Reading comprehension and writing ability are essential
 Math Connections II or the equivalent
Interests and Attitudes: It is important for students to have particular interests and possess certain
attitudes in order to excel in this program. Students applying for the Business Management program,
students should possess the following:
 A strong desire to explore a wide range of career possibilities
 A solid interest in learning personal finances, including payroll, checks, credit cards, insurance,
rent, and retirement accounts
 An eagerness to strengthen the skills needed for success in every career choice
 An interest in marketing, advertising, merchandising, retail, or customer service
 A readiness to participate in a work-study program or take a college course
 A commitment to community service
 An ability to exhibit professional behavior at all times
Overview: The following is a brief overview of what happens in Business Management.
The Business Management program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to study
management, marketing, accounting, computer applications, while exploring future options through
college and business visits. Students learn personal financial management. Students have the chance to
participate in numerous practical and real world activities inside and outside of the classroom, including
the operation of a for-profit, in-class business.
Objectives: In this program, students can expect to learn and achieve the following:
 Develop the ability to live within a budget
 Develop expertise in marketing, advertising, merchandising, retail, and customer service
 Prepare a professional business plan
 Create, market, and operate classroom and/or school-wide, micro-businesses
 Visit colleges and businesses to learn about future careers
 Take advantage of leadership, scholarship, and travel opportunities offered through the local,
state, and national DECA organization
 Earn college credit from Vermont Technical College and Community College of Vermont through
the dual enrollment program
College Credit and Industry Certifications:
Students completing the program can earn the following college credits:
Vermont Technical College: BUS 1051 Information Processing, 3 credits & CIS 1080 Intro to
Spreadsheets and Database, 3 credits
Community College of Vermont: CIS 1041 Micro Computer Applications 3 credits, ACC101 Office
Accounting 3 credits and BUS 1010 Introduction to Business 3 credits

Students will earn a Career Safe industry-recognized certification
After the Program:
Business Management provides a strong foundation for successful college careers or immediate
employment in the workforce. Past students have attended Vermont Technical College, University of
Vermont, Thomas College, Norwich University, and New England School of Hair Design, among others.
Other students have secured jobs in a variety of fields.
Job Titles Include:

Business Management:
Participate in subsidiary business each semester
Participate in at least 80% of subsidiary’s meetings
Participate in combined activities with Graphics, Film, Building Trades, and others as schedule
allows

College comparison -- everyone
College applications and essays – seniors required. Juniors encouraged
Minimum of 8 visits to businesses and/or colleges, with reflection sheets
Flexible Pathways or Dual Enrollment – seniors must enroll or work to increase Accuplacer
scores to reach passing levels
Resume, application letter, application forms, formal interview
Community Involvement: (50 hours) -- everyone
Maintain your own documentation
May be one major project or several small activities
Participate in centerwide community events

Reading: everyone
Document a minimum of 1,000 pages for the year (almost any source is acceptable). Grade will
be entered for 250 pages per marking period. Some will be completed as part of English
assignments, and some as classroom assignments

Passing Research Paper—in English or independently
Documented time for at least 30 hours on project – seniors
Documented time for at least 15 hours – may be business plan -- juniors

Pass other activities and work as assigned. All grades are based on a point system which will be clearly
described and understood by all. Every student’s grade is earned by the student; many choices are
available, and many ways to improve a grade are available.
