THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR
14TH SUNDAY
SEPTEMBER 14, 2014
10:00 O’CLOCK
C O ME A N D W O R S H I P . Worship is a form of service to God,
through which we come to know God among us transforming
hearts, minds and spirits, and calling us to continue Christ’s
mission in the world. Through our presence together today, we are
joined with those who’ve been part of the 316-year ministry of this
church, and with the great communion of all faithful Christians from
every time and place.
V I S I T O R S . We hope you will know the hospitality of this
community as you worship with us today. Please share your
presence with us by filling out the connect card and nametag in the
pew rack in front of you. Following worship, join us for
refreshments in the Fellowship Center, where the pastor and
others hope to get to know you better. Deacons and welcomers will
be wearing nametags and are happy to provide you with a
welcome packet, and to introduce you to others in the
congregation. Look for them in the Fellowship Center and by the
Welcome Table, where you will find information about our church
and programs.

THE MORNING WORSHIP
THE PEOPLE’S PREPARATION
Another wrestler
We are all different, and as the old Puritans said, God does not break all hearts in the same way. But it is a central
strand of most Christian living that everybody needs, from time to time, to wrestle privately with God and his will. It
is necessary, too, that Christian leaders should be seen to be telling their own story truly. For Paul, his story was
closely linked with God’s unveiling of Jesus as the true messiah, the crucified and risen Lord of the world. His life,
his vocation, his whole identity was stamped with the gospel message. —Tom Wright, Paul for Everyone: Galatians
and Thessalonians
Conversion is the process, gradual or sudden, by which a self hitherto divided, and consciously wrong, inferior and
unhappy, becomes unified and consciously right, superior and happy, in consequence of its firmer hold upon
religious realities.
—William James, Varieties of Religious
Experience
GATHERING: WE ARE CALLED
THE BELLS AND THE PREPARATION
At the chiming of the bells, please join together in a common discipline of silence as we gather for
worship, that we might listen quietly for God’s presence. Please also silence cell phones and pagers
at this time.

HYMN OF RESPONSE NO. 280 (Blue Hymnal)
*
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound
—2 Corinthians 5:16-19
From now on, therefore, we regard no one human point of view; even though we once knew
Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ,
there is a new creation: everything old had passed away; see, everything has become new! All
this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of
reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their
trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Town Hall Meeting. Curious about how Session is approaching next year’s budget? This year, we will engage

after worship.

What is the workshop rotation curriculum? Why are we using it? How does it work? The Children’s Ministries
Team will lead this ICL. Are you thinking about teaching and want practical help? Come join us for an
interactive hour and learn about the curriculum we are using in Sunday School.
Encountering God: Spiritual Autobiographies
Sundays, September 28, October 5 and 12
How do we experience God’s presence? Is it a sudden and dramatic encounter like Paul’s on the road to
Damascus, or can it be a growing awareness of God? Is it internal or external? Is it director-mediated by
others? When we talk about religious conversion, what do we mean?
This fall, we will explore how some famous figures encountered God. We will draw inspiration from the
spiritual autobiographies of an array of people including the Apostle Paul, former atheist C. S. Lewis, political
figure Chuck Colson, Mother Teresa, and popular singer Bono. If you’d like to learn more, we recommend a
resource that is in its second edition called Finding God: a Treasury of Conversion Stories (John Mulder, ed.).
Join us as we explore how we encounter God today.

visits. Volunteer time commitment is one two-hour
training and the ability to volunteer one hour per
week. To learn more about joining Interfaith
Caregivers as a volunteer or care recipient, please

children to design. These bags will be updated
weekly. Please return bags at the end of
worship.
K-5th grade Sunday School, Nursery, Preschool,
and LOGOS registration forms are available on
the website and in the church office.
Nursery Childcare for children birth through age
two is available every Sunday in the nursery. The
nursery is located in Rm 103 off of the Fellowship
Center. Cara Taylor, our permanent childcare
provider, provides a nurturing, safe environment for
our children. Silent beepers are available for
parents. Thank you, Cara Taylor and Lori
Pressler for providing childcare this morning.
Preschool Sunday School for children three
through PreK meets in the classroom located at the
bottom of the stairs below the church offices. The
children will have the opportunity to experience free
play, Bible story time, art, and snack in a nurturing,
safe environment. Parents are asked to sign their
preschoolers in and out each week. Thank you,
Amy Maurer for teaching this morning and
thank you to Lindsay Sanford for assisting
Amy.
K- Grade 5 Sunday School continues today. We
are currently using is the PCUSA’s We Believe
Workshop curriculum. The children will begin their
first unit today: Joseph: God’s Dreamer. Genesis
37; 39:1-45:8.
We want the children to learn that God is at work in
and around us, even when we don’t realize it. While
they may not fully grasp this idea at this stage in
their lives, it is still important for them to hear it
now. There are many lessons of faith that we do
not fully understand as children that come back to
us as we grow older and are able to apply them to
our lives. There is also the lesson best expressed
by Paul in Romans 8:28: “We know that all things
work together for good for those who love God,
who are called according to God’s purpose.” God
works through all of human history, the good and
the bad, to bring about God’s purposes for the
world. Joseph says to his brothers, “God sent me
before you to preserve life. . . . It was not you who
sent me here, but God” (Genesis 45:5b, 8a).
Today, children in Kindergarten through Grade 5
will exit the Meetinghouse following the children’s
message for Sunday School. Kindergarten and first
graders will be in the drama rotation, Rm104.
Second through fifth graders will be in the computer
lab rotation, Rm 105. Thank you to our unit one
teachers: Catherine Eldridge, Bonnie Galloway,
Avagail Morgan, Tom Roper, Lindsay Sanford,
and Geneva Steck.
LOGOS, a midweek, enrichment program
resumes on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for children 3
through Grade 5. The children have the opportunity
to build relationships with their peers, youth, and
adults in the congregation and to nurture their
relationship with God through music, playtime, art,
family dinner hour, and Bible study. The Theme of
LOGOS this year is Stories of the Bible. Our theme
that night will be Welcome Back to LOGOS: Let’s
get to know each other! To register your child for
LOGOS, please contact Ruth Conover or Robyn
Campbell in the church office.
The LOGOS kitchen crew needs a few helpers on
Wednesday evenings cook, serve, and clean up.
Are you available weekly, monthly, every other
week? We would appreciate your help! Contact
Robyn Campbell.

The Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, formerly
known as the Maidenhead Meetinghouse, was founded
by settlers who came down from Long Island and

granted land nearby that was never used, most likely
because the grantors expected an Anglican church and
the settlers wanted a Presbyterian one. A Meetinghouse
