Geometry Course Expectations
2013-2014
Overview: Geometry is a regent’s level mathematics course that is typically taken in
sequence after Integrated Algebra and before Algebra2/Trigonometry. It is a full year
course that culminates in a regent’s exam.
Materials:
Students should obtain: 3 Ring Binder with 2 sections, writing utensils, 2 highlighters, a
compass, and index cards.
A calculator and textbook will be provided and the student is responsible for taking care
of them.
Your grade will be based upon the following components:
I.
Tests, Quizzes, and Projects
-
Tests and quizzes will be given on a regular basis, either announced or
unannounced. Most will be cumulative and feature regent’s style questions.
-
Tests and quizzes missed due to excused absences must be made up within a
week and it is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time to make up
missed exams. They may not be made up during class time.
-
Tests and quizzes missed due to unexcused absences will receive a grade of
0.
-
Projects will be assigned on occasion to be completed at home. It is
expected students will follow all guidelines associate with each individual
project.
II.
Homework
-
Homework is not a punishment. It is essential to reinforcing what you have
learned in class and to help you determine what you do or do not understand.
-
Homework will be assigned on an almost nightly basis and is due the next
class. It may be collected or checked.
-
A checked homework is worth 5 points.
-
Homework may be made up for partial credit. Specifications for how to
make up homework will be given separately. A made up homework will be
worth 3 points.
-
If a student does not understand how to complete a homework question,
they will be expected to copy the question down and come to extra help for
assistance.
III.
Classwork and Participation: In order to be successful, a student must be an
active participant in class on a daily basis. There are several components to this
grade:
-
Attendance: Each unexcused absence will result in a 5 point deduction. Each
unexcused late will result in a 2 point deduction.
-
Notebook: Students are expected to have a 3 ring binder with two sections,
one for homework and one for classwork/notes. Each day when a student
arrives to class they will copy down the day’s aim and do now. Notebooks will
be checked periodically through spot checks and quizzes.
-
Classwork: Occasionally, student classwork will be collected and graded.
-
Overall Participation: The participation grade will be based on student
behavior, preparedness, and attentiveness.
IV.
Interim Assessments:
-
Each quarter, an interim assessment will be given as a cumulative exam
covering all material from the year. The questions will be regents style.
