Description:
Methods of teaching ESL for bilingual and ESL teachers. Instructional
strategies are developed for transitioning to English and mainstreaming
second language English-speakers. Emphasis on developing instructional
procedures for teaching reading and writing, and developing oral language.
Content/subject sheltered instructional techniques.
Prerequisite:
EDUC 3302 or consent of instructor
Course Outcomes:
Upon the conclusion of this course, students actively engaged in learning will be able to:
1. Understand fundamental language concepts and know the structure and conventions of
the English language.
2. Understand the process of first-and second-language acquisition and use this knowledge
to promote students’ language development in English.
3. Understand ESL teaching methods and use this knowledge to plan and implement
effective, developmentally appropriate ESL instruction.
4. Understand the factors that affect ESL students’ learning of academic content, language,
and culture.
5. Understand formal and informal assessment procedures and instruments (language
proficiency and academic achievement) used in ESL programs and use assessment
results to plan and adapt instruction.

Attendance Requirements:
Students must submit assignments weekly as listed in course schedule.

Course Requirements:
 General: This online course will be presented via the Blackboard Learning System .
Complete all assignments by midnight CST (Central Standard Time) on the due date.
Late assignments receive 0 point.
 Online Testing: The final exam will be open-book and consist of multiple choice and
short answer questions. It will be available on Blackboard for several days during the
assigned week.
 Attendance: Attendance is expected and anticipated. Students are responsible for the
material presented on Blackboard as well as in the assigned readings and writings.
Assignments:
1. Research Paper: This paper will combine research (to construct a scholarly paper)
with reflection (to address your response to ESL) that discusses English as a Second
Language. Choose one ESL issue from the textbook as a focal point, and describe the
issue. Your research paper must be typed and proofread prior to turning it in to the
instructor. Points will be deducted for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Double
spaced, APA style, Times New Roman 12 point font, minimum of five references,
1500 words. Information regarding the APA style may be found at http://wbu.edu/ .
2. Review of TExES ESL Preparation Manual: Read manual and take the practice test.
Score answers and analyze your competencies. Write a two page paper including the
analysis of your scores and a reflection on the test manual and testing process.
3. Weekly Discussion Posts and Responses: Discussion threads which will contain
thoughts on your readings from the text book and supplemental readings. I will post
three threads each week for discussion. You will respond to at least two classmates’
posts each week. Responses should elaborate and clarify, support ideas, build on or
challenge another’s ideas, apply ideas to life, or paraphrase/summarize.
4. ELPS Aligned Lesson Plan: Lesson plan will include opportunities for students to
listen, speak, read, and write and demonstrate specific ways for teacher to check for
understanding.
5. Final Exam: Based on class discussions and textbook reading.
