Honors Greek Theater Mask Project
INSTRUCTIONS: Now that you have read Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex, as well as discussed and analyzed the play’s
complex characters, you will create a Greek Theater Mask for Oedipus, Creon, Teiresias, or Jocasta. In addition to
creating a mask for one of these complex characters, you will write an analysis of him or her. Follow the guidelines below:
1. Making the Mask: To make your mask, you may use a plain mask from a craft or costume store, or you can
make your own with clay, paper mache, cardboard, foam board, etc. You may not use a paper plate or a sheet of
paper.
2. Decorating the Mask: When decorating your mask, you may use paint, markers, yarn, construction/color
paper, etc. (Be sure to write your name on the inside of the mask.) The mask’s decorations should serve the
same functions as the original ancient Greek masks did: identifying the gender, class, and age of the character.
Furthermore, the mask’s decorations should reflect the character’s personality, emotions, characteristics, etc. In
order to do so, incorporate at least two symbols of him or her on your mask.
3. Character Analysis: Your character analysis should consist of a minimum of three paragraphs (7 sentences
minimum each). In these paragraphs, you should analyze how s/he develops over the course of the text, interacts
with other characters, advances the plot, and develops the theme of the play. Be sure to cite strong and thorough
textual evidence to support your analysis (minimum of one direct quote from the play per paragraph). This portion
should be typed, double-spaced, and in 12 point Times New Roman font (in accordance with MLA formatting).
DUE DATE: Your completed project is due at the beginning of class on _______________________________. Ten
points will be deducted from the project’s grade for every day that your project is turned in late. You should also have your
rubric attached to your project when you turn it in. If you do not have your rubric, five points will be deducted from the
project grade. Don’t forget to have a backup; deletion, computer viruses, etc., will not be acceptable excuses for late
submission.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Remember that according to your course syllabus, actions such as cheating, comparing
answers, copying homework, and plagiarism will result in a zero and disciplinary action.
